The article really is worth a read if you build complex systems. My takeaway from this is that you shouldn't schedule maintenance work during "weird" times. Had they not been deploying new code on leap day (UTC), the outage would have been

While you're absolutely right, I don't think the OP realized that's what he was saying, or he would have written it. I was merely pointing this out. There were successes though, even back then. It was a long shot, yes, but not a proven dea

You're essentially saying that trying to do Loopt at all was a mistake and we just should have done something else. Everyone seems to forget that before iPhone, and later Android, you had no choice but to partner with carriers - there was n

I think that even if you add up all of Apple's indiscretions so far (and I agree with you they've made mistakes), you'd find the number to be small, and the number still outstanding even smaller. It's not going to be a perfectly smooth rid

I think that as long as Apple stays impartial, verifies the identities of developers, and fights attempts by governments to abuse revocation, this is actually a development we should welcome and encourage. Imagine if by default, all softwar

Most email clients won't take kindly to CSS that isn't inline. I also tried data URLs and inline attachments before going the table route.

That's how I learned too! I haven't looked at it in ages, but assuming it's still maintained, got through the Gentoo Handbook at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/ and do all of it. Research anything you encounter that you don't und

The real problem here is that cell phone networks were originally (and to a large extent still are) designed with assumptions that clients will play nice. Even the carriers' contracts with other vendors are structured this way. As an examp

This should be cause for serious concern. There's often no way to prove that someone knows a key or pass-phrase. If a personal computer I've used for years has TrueCrypt at boot, perhaps a reasonable argument[1] could be made that I know th

Best I can tell, there is zero incentive for Quora (or any other site, for that matter) to care. Their current redirect logic in no way hurts their user experience. Right now they protect their users' privacy. What benefit do they realize

I'd be very careful about trying to "resurrect" failed start-up ideas like this. Unless you're one of very few people, you can't effectively solve a problem you don't have personally. If you try and things start to look like they're work
