It's only magic if it's poorly or non-documented. I'm aware of many of the internals, and have written my own SynchronizationContext before. Execution actually can (and often) does continue using the same thread. I still strongly believe i

Promises are fine, but I much prefer C#'s await. The last example using await: try { await Parse.User.logIn("user", "pass"); var results = await query.find(); await results[0].save(new { key = value }); } catch (Exception

Please forgive me if I don't count coverage by Techcrunch as verification. Did he tweet it? Link from FB? Send a signed email? It could be legit, but the bar should be higher than this.

Proof of authenticity? Anyone could have registered that tumblr, and it has no other content. Please leave tabloid gossip to the tabloids until real information is available - and then leave it off HN.

Judging by all he's accomplished at Microsoft, I'm sure Scott could successfully lead a team to solve his problem and bring a product to market. But he doesn't. I (luckily) would not have use for such a product. If he doesn't care enough

What was wrong with ROW_NUMBER()? It worked just fine for me, and partitioning was frequently useful.

How about any cases where you don't want to transfer all the rows you're skipping over the wire? As in, nearly all cases?

This is what my friends at Loopt helped build after getting acquired by Green Dot. If you have enough money to use Fidelity or Schwab there are better options, but their mobile tooling is really good, it's hard to get surprised, and the cus

Hint: the web is one thing, but if you're deploying a library that talks to your own server, consider embedding your own root certificate. In addition to verifying the traffic isn't being proxied[1], you can also issue 10 or 20 year cert

I suspect the "pure awesome" part is at the IHttpModule and IHttpHandler level, where you can do everything except receive and produce grievously invalid HTTP requests. If you need to do that, IIS is extensible via WCF to host more than HT

Does Parse validate the SSL certificate in a way that can't be patched at runtime? If not, it's just as possible to selectively spoof the Parse request as the Apple request. Sorry, but untrusted hardware can always win. For a case study of

Why don't they just build in a delay before the new key starts working? Even a few hours would be enough to prevent most thefts without being too inconvenient on the rare occasion you lose a key. This is just poor design, even given the EU

The elephant in the room that nobody ever talks about is the linux kernel's lack of a stable ABI. Windows and OS X drivers don't need to be recompiled every time the kernel is updated, whereas in linux it's nearly always required. If the sa

My worry is that we'll see a proliferation of models like has happened to mattresses, where each store has their own special line (even if in name only). If you can't be sure it's really the same, it's much harder to comparison shop. We mig

Benchmarking anything on EC2 instances will yield statistically suspect results. You know nothing about the other workloads on the box, the underlying hardware, or the network connectivity.
