I lied about tomorrow. The "post" of post-mortem requires it be over. Still not done changing things.

I'll post something more detailed tomorrow, but in terms of data loss, we went down at 2014-01-05 16:10:29 PST and restored a backup from 2014-01-05 01:00:00 PST.

This was all me. I probably should have thought about it more, but just wanted to make it clear we knew something was wrong and were working on it. Load was not a concern. Though the article is correct, with everything else that was going o

Google should penalize sites that allow comment spam. Incentives are then clearly aligned, as the affected site has the power to fix its problem. Sites that can't afford to moderate their contents should just turn comments off. As ment

Rails in January 2013 was mentioned specifically because a series of security bugs allowed attackers to achieve remote code execution with specially crafted URL parameters. Thus someone could get a remote shell on your box running as the ra

I have an ASUS PQ321Q. Due to lack of support in OS X Mavericks for DP1.2 MST, OS X can only do 30Hz, but Windows on the same hardware can do 60Hz. The difference is staggering. 30Hz is terrible, and the lag when moving the mouse, dragging

While you're absolutely right, this is my home network, and not that big a deal. I'd guess that even outdated FreeBSD is way more secure than most consumer router firmware, which hopefully makes me a less appealing target.

I've got pfSense[1] running on a passively cooled embedded board[2]. I then use whatever wireless APs I want in bridge mode. I like this because x86 will always be compatible with anything I might run in the future, and changing out wi

The Octopart team has done a great job with HNSearch, and we really appreciate the huge favor they've done us by providing it. That said, due to limitations on our end around how they integrate with us, they're not able to offer r

Anyone who's rolled out IPv6 on a large internal network or public facing site, why did you bother? Right now it seems like more work and complexity for exactly zero benefit.

I think IPv6 is similar to XHTML. Not backwards compatible with no clear benefit for most users. I'll wait for what follows (HTML5), or at least wait as long as I can.

I'm honestly not interested in all the reasons you won't use these servers. I doubt Dell designed these speculatively. One or more Dell customers likely requested them. Who are these customers, and what is their use case? That

CloudFlare was taking too long to produce their own certificate, so I provided them with an extra we had for other uses: Serial Number: 1D 9B 1D 4D 32 6C 01 B6 AC 23 61 14 BB 6D 6C 89 Fingerprint (SHA1): 5A 2B 9A 0C 7D 29 65 AE B0 6A

If I had to guess, your IP is banned by HN, and CloudFlare interprets our closing the connection as a connection issue. Since you've not listed your IP, I can't check, but if you want help, feel free to email me.

I have an Asus PQ321Q, and use it at 1x. It's fine. It replaced two 30" monitors I had before and is so much better now that I no longer need to pan my head and the middle (where the bezels used to be) is actually useful.
