One thing that I've been doing lately is creating a "synbiogpt", and from it, have come to realize the limitations of the custom GPTs. - Biological sequence data is usually quite long. This is fine if the biological data is i

I build synthetic DNA. In the beginning (and still) I do a ton of steps by hand that I’ve slowly been moving to robots. Hours and hours at a bench picking colonies, designing sequences by-hand for customers instead of using software, writin

You don't even need genetic testing to see holes in that hypothesis (though there is no proof of a parasitic relationship genetically) - it is pretty easy to see phylogenetically the evolution of metamorphosis. Ie, hemimetabolous insec

My favorite quote I saw or heard somewhere on the rogue genetic elements in us all: “We are but a raft of genes in an ocean of retrotransposons” A little hyperbolic, but dang there are a lot

What about the SRA or Genbank? Those are pretty readily collected DNA databases. You can get curation from uniprot or embl or pdb or kegg or rhea.

ApE is one of those tools that is so old-school but just works. I used to hate using it but it's really grown on me - Snapgene is just too darn expensive and benchling isn't very power user friendly

Teal is great for this - statically typed and compiles down to lua. I’ve even integrated it into other languages because teal is written in teal (compiling down to lua, which can be run on lots of different devices!) https://gith

How about “oligo pool synthesis chips” != “dna synthesis machines” “Harmful” can also be seen the other way. From my view within the industry, it is harmful that the tech does not exist, and the idea of harmfulness is, largely, propaganda p

If we had really smart software engineers, well paid red-teams, and robust government policy collaboration with industry, I think we can make it at least 95% harder to create something dangerous. We have none of those, though. It's sup
