Anyone who's actually used Rust, C++, Scala, and Java knows that Rust and Scala involve considerably less suffering than their counterparts. The "adopted features" don't change the fundamental problems. Java 8 lambdas a

If I'm reading this correctly, the Kafka topic only had 5 partitions, but they had 10 workers. With the Spark direct stream, kafka partitions are 1:1 with spark partitions, which means at most half of the workers would be doing work wi

Despite being almost 20 years old, the only thing about this that sounds anachronistic is extolling the virtues of exceptions failing at runtime.

You may have to think about it, but you certainly aren't doing the work of e.g. writing malloc and free statements.

That's a somewhat poor analogy, since airbags etc don't prevent you from doing certain driving maneuvers. Static type systems prevent you from expressing certain programs (I think this is a good thing, but not everyone does). A be

As far as books go, Scala for the Impatient is one of the few I'd recommend. The first half of it is available for free https://www.typesafe.com/resources/e-book/scala-for-the-impa...

I studied enough aikido to reach 2nd kyu (brown belt equivalent). Your analogy is crap. The only useful thing I learned from Aikido was breakfalling, which could have been taught as an isolated skill in much less time.

I've worked with people who explicitly said that the reason they wanted to go with technology XYZ was because it looks good on a resume.

Scala. Checked exceptions make Java 8 lambdas basically worthless. Play is a Scala project first and foremost.

I agree with your point in general. However, in this particular case, what you wrote isn't equivalent. The explicit use of flatMap(Option.apply) in the first example is to deal with the case of address existing, but being a null strin

That is not a bug. That is subtype inference working correctly. If you (mistakenly) expected the return type of f to be Option[Int], say so, and you'll get a compile time error telling you about your mistake: scala> def f(x: Int):

There is nothing on the market competitive with a MBPr in terms of hardware (completely ignoring software). The XPS 15 is the closest, and it's apparently plagued by coil whine.

Spark streaming will handle 0.5 second batches. If you deeply care about sub-second latency, JVM in general is not where you want to be.

No, a compile time error is nothing at all like a runtime null pointer exception. Given that the language supports subtype polymorphism, this is exactly how the type inference should work. Any is the narrowest available supertype. If you d

No, because if you then try to call an Int-specific method on an item from that List[Any], you will still get a compile time error.
