The ‘go to person’ is probably the best bet, most researchers are willing to learn new things so hopefully this would lead to improvements. I saw this formalised in a group in KTH where a person’s job was to help researchers and students ge

I see this so often with academics. They’re not developers and only have basic coding ability. So they make all kinds of basic mistakes like trying to load a bunch of images converting them to float (IR images for example) and wondering whe

So you printed it in pieces and assembled it? I’m sorry to be harsh but this is the kind of thing we get undergrads to do on day one of an internship. Why do you feel it was worthy of posting on HN?

It looks laser cut, most schools would have a laser cutter nowadays because they’re stupidly easy to use. It would be difficult, and inadvisable to print something this large on a regular 3D printer. Thingyverse is literally full of designs

Wow, you’re right. Downvotes because someone uploaded a poor laser cut design to GitHub instead of thingyverse.

Which is daft because you can just cut another slot and shove a bit in at an angle to lock it — no glue needed. Also the CAD is useless unless you have the exact thickness of material to laser cut since you can't adjust the cut width.

Well yes, if you assume that gods are real and reveal themselves to the world they created. Then you go down he dreary path of prime motivators etc. That’s no fun. If on the other hand you start with the premise that there is a magical worl

It’s from Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. From this and other similar works such as Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods or Neil Gaiman’s Ameeican Gods, deities pop into existence from the pure belief of people. It’s a great liter

Mostly you’re trading spatial real estate on your sensor for spectral resolution. A conmon approach is to use all vertical pixels for wavelength data. By using a diffraction grating to disperse the light vertically you get a view of the wor

Everyone is our company is issued a HP hunk of garbage. Mine sits on top of a set of drawers buried under some manuals. Almost everyone in our team has a Mac, a custom built PC or some other nice machine. I boot the HP probably once a year

That’s supposedly expected behaviour. When I’m standing at my rig in the lab it pings me to stand, just like when I sit at my desk. This actually means get up and/or walk about — which usually works to fill that segment of the ring. B

The only reason, if you can call it that, is academic inertia. It’s is taught as part of most engineering degrees and is accessible enough for students to stick with it.
