I’m an aeronautical engineer with a PhD in fluid mechanics, there’s not too much else to say on the transition to academia TBH. Regarding teaching, my exhaustion with an over dependence on PowerPoint for every aspect of communication in ind

For whatever reasons, probably because I don’t say ‘no’ or I’m too arrogant to say ‘I don’t know’, I’m one of those people who always tries to help. I don’t keep a brag document but I do keep a folder called People where there are folders

The Irish bag tax has been increased from €0.15 to €0.44 over the years.

While Ireland has certainly lead the way in the plastic bag tax we’re still doing poorly when it comes to waste management. There’s still a culture that accepts fly tipping in picturesque areas of the countryside, litter is still a problem

Oh I know. I’ve deliberately chosen to follow the new default. I’m one of those people who avoids customisation because I often have to work with students and remote machines.

I would really disagree, the 2.5–2.7 UI was excellent. It was fast, efficient and extremely customisable to match the style of popular alternatives. The 2.4 era UI was a very different beast however. The main issues new users have are often

I would compare the Blender UI to Vim. Once you spend a bit of time with it you wonder why every other piece of software isn't this efficient. I'd also go so far as to say that the 2.80 UI overhaul has slowed me down a bit. Things

I'm running the 2.80 release candidate on my 5k iMac with an AMD card on 10.14. It doesn't support rendering on the GPU but the CPU rendering works just fine. I can't imagine the GPU is any faster than the CPU either, certain

Blender is an incredible achievement for the open source community. It is an extraordinarily capable bit of software and 2.80 brings so many huge changes and refinements. While it still remains a complex bit of software it is not has diffic

A significant number of the academics I know and work with have a MacBook of some description. They’re incredibly popular in Universities. I can run PowerPoint for teaching as well as all the *nix stuff I need for research.

SpaceChem was the best iPad game I’ve ever played. It’s a shame Zachtronics decided to drop support due the changes with iOS 7.

So this is just like Mathpix? https://mathpix.com/ I’ve never found typing out LaTeX equations particularly tedious, unless you’re doing multi-page derivations in which case you’re spending more time checking for errors.

The comment regarding QuickLookUIService is interesting. Not because I use an eGPU but because QuickLookUIService is always reported as using significant energy on my mid 2014 15” MBP. This has encouraged me to dig deeper and to try to find
