Older / larger redwoods can survive intense fires. Their bark is fire resistant.

Good point! I wonder if a 1000 year old tree would gather more or less carbon over it's lifetime than 20 separate 50 year old trees?

A redwood tree can live for more than 2000 years. That seems plenty long for carbon sequestration. We should pay the logging companies to save a certain number of trees instead of cutting them every 30 or so years.

Another happy, paying kagi user here. I find the search results for dev related queries MUCH better than google. This is mostly because I set official documentation sites to have a higher precedence (No more w3 schools appearing above MDN,

I have been greatly enjoying writing a side project in phoenix/liveview. It's fun, works well, community is welcoming, etc. Previously I was writing side projects with Go APIs and react, and compared to that, this is miles ahead.

I like to do this to address PR feedback, mostly because we use bitbucket, and it's UI for reviewing individual commits sucks.

Grinnell alum here - our first CS class is in Scheme. I expected the class would be a breeze because I already had a few years of programming experience in Java/Python in highschool. Turns out that lisp is way different, and I was abou

Good read. There are so many ways to manage dotfiles... Here are some features of the system[1] I made if anyone is interested: * No system links * Doesn't rely on git * Simple CLI for diff, commit, push, pull etc * Install files witho

For me, and I assume many others, vim is fun. It sort of gamifies text editing. There's always new things to learn, and executing advance keystrokes is satisfying. Once you know them, moving to other IDE's is a pleasure because th

Nice to see a another Grinnell alum in the wild! I want to try plans, but lost access to my @grinnell.edu email after I graduated. What do you think about it? Should I check it out?

You can do `networkQuality -c` and it will output json. It would be fun to make a tiny web front end for it on localhost.

It seems like Covid left a lot of restaurants scrambling for contactless ordering solutions. They can be nice, but I find it annoying when I have to use my phone to look at a menu or to make an order. How does your system work? My side proj

I see the advantages with this, but this would be pretty annoying on a slow or choppy internet connection. I highly value being able to develop software with little or no internet.

Casper bed, Casper pillow, cotton sheets. Watching the mattress inflate was extremely satisfying. I think it's pretty comfy. I live in a tiny loft so moving a conventional mattress into it would be very difficult.
