this is awesome! btw if you plan to make an iOS app, maybe you'll be delighted to know that you can apply as an open source developer to free Xamarin licenses: http://resources.xamarin.com/open-source-contributor.html

Quite funny that you try to generalize a statement from what appears to be just one single example (note: mono developer here and this is the first news I have about a fuckup like this).

Is there a way to use Hangouts without having a G+ profile?

XamarinStudio is available for Linux, just under a different name: "MonoDevelop". It has that name because in Linux the Xamarin offerings don't work, therefore they're not included in MonoDevelop.

Exactly, one reports bugs in the bug tracker (with code that demonstrates the issue), not in HN. By the way, did you test with the new garbage collector? (Enabled by default in Mono 3.2.x)

You guys are talking about different things. The licences of the projects (EntityFramework, ASP.NET) are opensource, but the licence only applies to the sources. Nuget packages, however, are binary. And they might have a different licence.

Last time I looked at heroku, I had to install some non-open-source command-line tools to interact with it. So I'm wondering, is this alternative opensource now?

This has already been discussed in the past [1], and most people agreed that the reasons are bullshit because, yes, Mono [2] is alive and kicking. [1] http://www.aaronstannard.com/post/2010/07/03/NET-Cult
