I realize exactly how inefficient it would be. If it hurts, don't do that. I'm the kind of person who optimizes with assembly, counts cache misses, counts TLB misses, and pays attention to pipeline stalls. I definitely understand

I definitely like the "lack of package manager, common build system". For me, having those is a negative for a language like rust. You see, my OS already comes with those, and I expect to use them. I have the Debian package system

CHERI is an attempt. DARPA paid to have it for RISC-V and ARMv8. It was originally for MIPS. https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/security/ctsrd/cheri/ It is fundamentally like the 80286 segments, but with

Yes. If you don't really want to pass an array then don't do that. The language shouldn't get in the way when somebody wants to pass an array. Take the address, and pass a pointer, if that is what you want to do. Maybe I want

C could have gained the safety of function prototypes without them. Note that the function bodies and call sites had the type information. It could have been propagated through the compiler and assembler to the linker, which would then chec

The meat of the proposal: "a pair consisting of a pointer to the start of the array, and a size_t of the array dimension" No, that still doesn't fix the ABI. It's syntactic sugar. It is most definitely not passing an arr

The performance problem has only gotten worse with time. Modern CPUs have a rough time switching tasks. There are all those mitigations for meltdown and spectre. Even before that though, the situation with the TLB was ugly. Limiting your da

Not even counting the unprecedented attempt with North Korea, it's the third he has done. Here they are: 1. Kosovo and Serbia 2. Israel and UAE 3. Israel and Bahrain There have been multiple nominations for that peace prize,

That's just because we didn't drive the pests to extinction and we didn't make the massive long-term investment in greenhouses. Had we done either, all-natural crops would be able to feed the world.

I think you could easily get past a megabyte with auto-generated parser code. That would be stuff like lex, yacc, bison, antlr, flex, etc. Anything with a big switch would qualify too, such as an emulator.

It's often the other way. The GMO doesn't need to be sprayed with pesticides. That is the case with Bt corn for example. Bt corn has a protein that stops caterpillars from eating. Organic stuff is normally grown on industrial scal

The rules may be “applied equally and judiciously for everyone”, not that I believe it, but that is like applying the law against stealing bread equally to rich and poor. One is against "inciting unlawful conduct to prevent a peaceful

The term "conspiracy theory" originated as an attempt to discredit people who had correctly recognized a very real conspiracy. Always remember that.

Deciding that a news source is too partisan is, itself, a partisan decision. Last I checked, Wikipedia accepted numerous traditional publications that have veered off the path of news into spreading unverified nonsense and lies of omission.

The "CSS pixel" is just a pixel, unscaled for high-dpi displays. The point is to avoid revealing the hardware while allowing a bigger starting amount for a bigger window. If you prefer, just pretend I wrote "32 MiB". Hum

You could require user consent for resource increases. For example, start the RAM at 12 times the number of CSS pixels. When the limit is hit, freeze the allocations until the user authorizes a doubling of the limit. Web sites would need ab

I remember that the web was very usable with a 133 MHz CPU, 32 MiB of RAM, a 3600 RPM hard disk, and a 1.5 megabit (0.128 megabit up) connection. That budget Android phone blows away the hardware that I was using. A quick search for the Sam

Are those helicopers lacking IR capability? They should have it, and that should work in most conditions.
