I'm afraid that unless the Monolith is somewhere under Gran Sasso, those effects are completely negligible. The time scales of the experiment are very short indeed (1e-9 seconds), but the influence of General Relativity is even smaller (1e-

Very true. I think most hate for C is really misplaced or for completely the wrong reasons. I like to think I'm a good C programmer, and I use most of the techniques you describe. But lately I've been wondering whether I'm not actually codi

No you're right! The idea is to implement Dart VM's all major browsers. It is claimed that due to the design of the language, these implementations will be a lot faster than JavaScript. But as no Dart implementations exist yet, people are s

Shouldn't string manipulation be more efficient if you have to everything by hand? Besides, using a recursive memory allocator takes away most of the pain and it's more efficient than a garbage collector.

I didn't take it seriously of course, I just saw this question and I was myself curious what the chances of a birthday collision actually are.

What is so bad about the C standard library? What would you change? I find it lacking a lot of essential features -- can you believe strdup isn't part of the C standard? -- but simplicity and minimalism has always been C's strongest point.

He doesn't really give any reasons for switching, apart from the memory use and privacy concerns. I don't care about privacy but the memory use is a problem. I have 2 GB RAM which should be plenty, but Chrome way too often locks up my machi

SHA-1 has a digest size of 160 bits. The first two bytes of these beautified hashes are predetermined, which lowers the size to 144 bits. For a more than 50% chance of a collision, more than 4 sextillion hashes[1] would have to be generated

I doubt it, as no single packet manager has delta updates, which is a crucial asset of their own solution. More importantly, they have no control over what comes in and goes out of the repositories. I doubt Google would want to deal with ev

I don't see how that would work. With the 4 vertices, he defines a square quad that gets "textured" in the fragment shader. If one were to use a point, only one pixel would be sent to the fragment shader.

I've read the article[1] and what they do is compare the proton flux as measured in Geneva with the neutrino signal measured in Gran Sasso. The proton signal is timeshifted a small amount until the curves overlap maximally. Where the leadin

That's coincidental. I once made a Linux kernel function hijacking module and I had the exact same idea. Well, without the freezing of other (kernel) threads, I didn't realize the problems yet. Now that I think about it I'm even more surpri

Of course it's easier, I was just trying to show that we do have the technology to identify objects of a scale of some tens of meters from a distance of hundreds of thousands of kilometres. It's a pretty amazing feat of technology, which al

A ball will not roll uphill, even when time is reversed. Gravity really is time-reversal invariant. But when you reverse time, you do have to invert all velocities. So the inverse of your experiment of a ball rolling down an incline is a ba

I can touch type in the sense that I don't look at my keyboard when I type, yet I don't really use ten fingers. I was never properly taught to type. Coincidentally, I'm trying to learn real touch typing as I think it could help me in Vim.
