My initial reaction was in agreement, but you’re almost certainly going to need a mechanism to manage schema changes. It makes sense to use the same system for both

I see no problem with this trend. If it’s easier to run in a container it’s probably easier to run outside of a container

I've been contemplating something along these lines for a bit: Step one is to understand the tradeoff space. Step two (which is sometimes much more difficult) is picking where in the tradeoff space makes sense for the business, but no

I disagree. There’s no reason TCP couldn’t work like that. See QUIC for example

I would only consider it if I can do it 100% locally, not sure if that’s the case. And I mean 100% locally without an internet connection

You could create a backup with the slow process, restore it, and then the restored database into a template

You have to pay a lot of latency for startup, and Postgres has all the built in isolation mechanisms internally so it’s easier to use

don’t have any off the top of my head sorry, I could be making it up but I’m pretty sure I remember reading that from several sources. Iirc it has to do with the fact that there isn’t really single message acknowledging?

100% agree that mathematical pedagogy in the USA is in terrible shape. It’s a hard problem, but we can do so much better

I independently arrived at a very similar design, but also maintain a hot pool of template instances to hide the latency of spinning one up. The state of the template databases is maintained in another database on the same pg instance. Anot

Using Kafka as a work queue is widely documented as a mistake. Using a single database results in a lot of operational simplicity and you get to skip a lot of distributed systems when all your state is in a single system

I like this approach a lot, but I’m unsure about time based vs number of items based fairness. I guess it really depends on the application.

I think the concepts of linear systems and multivaribale calculus are important for just understanding systems in general. Even without applying them all the time you can think about dynamics with them

Pretty common with lin alg and diffeq unfortunately. Many schools teach it as a toolbox instead of for understanding.

If a watt is 1 kg⋅m2⋅s−3, and we multiply by distance we get 1 kg⋅m3⋅s−3. I wonder what that means

I apply this thinking to lots of problems. Do the dumb thing that involves the least state and prove we need to lean more towards memory for speed. It’s much simpler to keep things correct when nothing is cached

I’d imagine there are many machines involved and maintaining one database is typically easier than maintaining many. I’d also imagine MySQL was already in operation, so there wasn’t any startup cost to storing data there. They already had a

Without giving evidence, I do agree that Postgres is a better database that serves the general case better. I use both in production for different purposes, but postgresql makes a lot more sense then SQLite as our primary database

I think sometimes obvious concepts like symmetries are hard to distill into the appropriate mathematical language. I’m willing to bet the isomorphism there is obvious to most folks, but the expression of its mathematical essence is not.
