I built Klicktrack based on Java and it's a great platform for a startup especially for larger teams. The only drawback I can think of is the compile deploy cycle which can be a bit annoying compared to scripting languages but it can be mit

Is the Dropbox protocol open and has an RFC? If not I think IANA should revise their practices to only allow registration of ports for protocols that do.

We use EC2 for our site and our system monitoring that checks TCP connectivity on our elastic ip every few minutes reports outages almost every day now. Have tried the forums but no one seems to know how to troubleshoot this.

When using Java, I prefer Stripes. For a new project I would definately use Python and Django.
