I agree but the article doesn’t explain why. I’ve been using Magit at work because it’s what everyone uses, and it just does useful shit I need to do, like help me revert specific chunks from an old commit, or migrate chunks to a differen

So, having been around a lot of different communication methods, I think email lists aren’t ideal, but for serious projects they’re better than all the alternatives. Chat has a way of getting completely lost. All your knowledge that goes in

I think one of the traps we fall into is imagining that an attacker is somehow intelligent (someone who can immediately attack video storage) but simultaneously uncreative (doesn’t think of some way to make the surveillance footage irreleva

I don’t know what the “equivalent experience” is, since I never really cared to learn what Nest does or why people want it.

All this hand-wringing about surveillance powers is not keeping up with how quickly our ability to surveil people is expanding. The fourth amendment seems kind of like a wet fart in a timeline where private companies can surveil the public

(Decay isn’t memory-less by definition , but we’ve empirically observed that it’s memory-less, and our current theories model it as memory-less. This is the opposite of “by definition”—“by observation” or “empirically”.)

Maybe you’ll hate me for this but when I hear food described as “authentic” I assume that the place is touristy! Something about the word “authentic” stands out like a red flag in restaurant reviews, warning me away. I like places with nega

Somehow this has been in the news recently but it’s been happening for a long, long time. There are some foods I just kinda dread and don’t order because they’re the same everywhere. If they’re the same everywhere, it’s because they’re li

Someone can break out their chemistry references, but I think N₂O is probably not workable as a fuel (or at best, not very good). It forms naturally in internal combustion engines, from air, at the temperature and pressures found in engines

It’s wild, but couldn’t we also explain this with a theory like “people have more trust in the institutions holding gold, and want better rates when they buy/sell?” Older generations seemed, to me at least, that they had some distrust

Yeah, I feel the same way. JC2 and JC3 are great. Never clicked with JC4. I had always thought the north island was empty because it was used for the train mission. Like, the island existed as a backdrop for a few missions near the end of t

That sounds completely backwards. It seems, again, obvious to me that it would be easier to add HTML->markdown converters to agents, given that there are orders of magnitude more websites out there compared to agent. If your agent sucks

This does not make any sense to me. Can you elaborate on this? It seems “obvious” to me that if you have a tool which can request a web page, you can make it so that this tool extracts the main content from the page’s HTML. Maybe there is s

I don’t understand why the agents requesting HTML can’t extract text from HTML themselves. You don’t have to feed the entire HTML document to your LLM. If that’s wasteful, why not have a little bit of glue that does some conversion?

You don’t even need to DIY, you can just pay an amount of money similar to the cost of 1970s hi-fi systems after adjusting for inflation. The nice hi-fi systems are still around, but they don’t look at all like old hi-fi (why would they? bo

I think manipulation is just negative influence, and influence doesn’t really have either positive or negative connotations.

I really don’t like this article. I think this article reflects more our desire to categorize things into neatly numbered lists, and reflects less any thorough understanding of influence. Big lists of aphorisms. Less in the way of concrete

I see this sentiment from time to time in the HN crowd, and I’m really interested in understanding more about it. My first reaction to this? I think that you’re using “manipulate” to describe a process where somebody doesn’t want to do some

JFC the author has done everything wrong here. A heterogenous build cluster with non-hermetic builds and shared caching. The fact that this is only a glibc symbol versioning problem and not something far more severe is, well, a blessing. At

I don’t think there’s any real insights there. Containers tend to be coarse-grained. For example, maybe you are writing a program, so you put the entire build environment in a container. If you have lots of programs with different dependenc

I’ve tried the second path at work and it’s grueling. “Almost certainly succeed” requires that you mostly plan out the implementation for it, and then monitor the LLM to ensure that it doesn’t get off track and do something awful. It’s ha

It’s one of the few “old internet” (1990s) sites around. It’s somehow managed to hold on to the culture it had from back then. IMO, snark is more and more relevant now that ChatGPT is polishing everybody’s writing into a milquetoast mush.

This is the right answer. I see a bunch of people talking about licensing fees for HDMI, but when you’re plugging in 4 monitors it’s really nice to only use one type of cable. If you’re only using one type of cable, it’s gonna be DP.
