I would rather not: - It involves making too many decisions on behalf of users. C++ dodges the question somewhat by making hash tables templated, so you can customize them. - There are a hojillion hash table libraries out there which are wr

I would describe an effect system as the part of a type system which describes actions and side effects rather than values. Under this definition, effects are radically different from types in the sense that apples are radically different f

Current and previous generations struggle too. Critical thinking and problem solving skills have always been an absolute bear to teach, and few teachers or school systems have the stomach to teach it. I’m thinking of science education, for

The thing about stuttering is that the first part of the name is fixed anyway, MOST of the time. If you want to search for `url.Parse`, you can find most of the usages just by searching for `url.Parse`, because the package will generally be

Well, one of the reasons why institutions are free to charge so much in the first place is because student loans are so hard to get discharged. Normal loans get discharged in bankruptcy. Student loans don’t.

I guess I wasn’t thinking of “find usages”, but as the article points out, it’s hard to find usages if the usages are dynamic. The solution—to write code which is less dynamic—helps code search and features like find usages.

Do you have some ideas for how to make code search better? Right now, code search is basically just text search. If you think code search tools “could and should” be a lot better, what kind of improvements are you thinking about? How would

I don’t see why things should be equal. The school system doesn’t spend an equal amount of money on each student in the first place. Students with special needs get more—that includes both students with learning disabilities and students wh

It’s a politically-charged talking point to discuss “useless” degrees. I have a question—should we determine whether a degree is useful or useless based on how much money you can earn using the degree? My answer is no, for the following rea

I think part of it is marketing and part of it is building last-mile infrastructure that doesn’t need to be upgraded for a long time. Last-mile is already such a pain, you might as well build something that will last. (Just my guess.)

The limits for other types of diving are interesting, too. All of the different gases you use for SCUBA diving have a maximum operating depth. At high pressures, various gases become toxic or cause side effects. Oxygen has a limit somewhere

What specific part are you saying was not “clear-cut”? The analysis of Damore’s rant? The rant is, well, a mess. If something is a mess that doesn’t mean that it’s 100% wrong. It contains unsubstantiated claims and logical leaps mixed in wi

Multirepo also comes with cost overhead. I think people talk about it somewhat less. I’ve worked at multirepo and monorepo places, both, before. My current company has a multirepo setup and it sure seems like it comes with plenty of tooling

Think about it like owning a machine gun. People have been murdering since the beginning of time, but machine guns make it easy to murder a lot of people very fast. So we don’t just have laws against murder, but we have laws restricting a

“GFCI” is maybe a bad name because it describes what the system is supposed to accomplish but not what it does. It interrupts the circuit in response to a current imbalance between hot and neutral. Kirchoff’s laws… if the current is imbalan
