Two inventions were required for BEV's to compete with even 1920's ICE vehicles: the power MOSfet (1970's) and the Lithium-ion battery (1990's). GM was about to put Lithium-ion batteries in the EV1 when the project was

Why not both? Part of why dark matter is such an attractive explanation is because there are no constraints on it. Unfortunately this seems to have relieved pressure to explore and test modified gravity.

I don't understand why consensus jumped to the conclusion that there must be a new form of undetectable matter instead trying to figure out what we don't know about gravity. Theoretical particle physics is even worse. There haven

Here is a complete simplified Kahan summation test and indeed it works with -O3 but fails with -Ofast. There must have been something else going on in my real program at -O3. However the original point that 'volatile' can be a

I did tests on Kahan summation recently on my macbook pro and -O3 defeated the algorithm while -O2 did not. Declaring the below variables as volatile restored error compensation with -O3. The relevant code is: kahan_y=g_sample_

It wasn't just old hardware. Upgrading from SunOS to the early Solaris versions on the same hardware was noticeably slower. 2.4 was the first usable version IMO and it improved a lot by the time 2.6 was out (but then they dropped sup

NaN usually indicates a bug or algorithmic problem, but not always. I have had cases where I need to detect NaN, present a useful message to the user even though everything is working as designed.

Pre-1992 it was SunOS and yes that is exactly what we want (without all the security holes). SunOS was BSD and Nirvana as far as Unix goes. Solaris was SysV and quickly earned the nickname "Slowlaris". For me FreeBSD is the funct

I've used ZFS on FreeBSD for many years and it's absolutely rock solid. There was even a case where an IPMI had been hacked and the attacker reformatted the disks for Windows 10 and I was able to recover most of the the data.
