This is true. The only difference is that now there's more money (and people's livelihood) on the table. Or even just bigger numbers.

This very thread has 533 upvotes currently. The highest I saw was around 2000. You honestly can't believe there are that many people on hn who think Firefox is a good browser or that simply don't want a WebKit/Blink monocultu

I guess you have proofs of that. Claiming that there's brigading just because people upvote what you don't find upvote-worthy is not very constructive. I mean, I've been a Mozilla volunteer for a couple of years, some years a

I find parts of your post quite offensive, to be honest, but let's have a debate anyway. The way I see it is that my (and other's) interests are not aligned with yours. You want a web that evolves quickly, I want a web that is not

I see what you mean, but on certain projects the language used can be a differentiator (not in marketing, but at least in concept). See for example Redox. The whole point is to build an operating system in Rust because of the language safet

To be fair, I thought that was the end of the article too. If it wasn't for your comment I wouldn't have read it. Maybe it's a mobile-only problem, but it was a weird placement choice nonetheless.

Companies did that for years with Linux, Apache, MySQL etc., and noone got riled up enough to produce this mess. I think another commenter got it right: this is a fuss created by commercial entities that wanted to have their cake and eat it

About GMO, you don't need to be anti-science to be against them. My problem is that GMO seeds are proprietary, that is you need to buy them from whoever produces them. And you don't get to use the seeds produced from the plants th

Google is not blocking edge, or at least we have no proof of that. In this instance I think it's safe to assume an oversight based on naive user agent whitelisting. And before I get accused of shilling, I hate chrome and despise Google

I see that your heart is in the right place, but I think as web developers we should take a blood oath that we will always optimize for standard compliance, instead. And for a standard that is not a moving target, while we're at it.

Industrial espionage is a thing most developed countries do, including the US. What makes China so special is that it's actually gaining enough economic power to make the US go at economic war with them.

I don't think anyone here is saying China is perfect or that this is the worst thing to ever happen. People are just pointing out this is a ridiculous situation. Anyway, we can be worried about something and still consider another thin

That no browser maker recognizes W3C's standard is a bit misleading. MDN (i.e. Mozilla) quotes the w3c recommendations all over the place. Google, from what I found around, cites nothing, not even WHATWG. Webkit cites MDN (which cites

FWIW, w3c publishes and standardize a lot more than just HTML and DOM. So calling it irrelevant seems a bit of a stretch.

The article seems to be against What3Words, so why would it be flag-worthy? I mean, he doesn't disclose the conflict of interest, but this doesn't seem an attempt to peddle a narrative that benefits the company in any way.
