Is salary transparency definitely a great thing for companies? I've been told that in law firms (where all non-partner position salaries are revealed) this causes a race to the bottom and is not good for employees.

Thanks so much for responding. My worry when reading articles like these is that I know I don't have the background to evaluate the technology, but I don't often know where to go to find people who do. This was a really useful perspective t

My apologies. 23andme does provide the raw data from the genotyping. What I think I meant to say was I wish they could do sequencing and give that data. Obviously I understand it's prohibitively costly though.

Taking your arguments though, is it clear that the lesson is teaching cannot be commoditized. Isn't it the lack of understanding and valuing of the research component that makes them see professors as adding little value? Programmers in mos

Having studied the techniques used to analyze DNA, I wish 23andme would send you your raw data. Nevertheless still awesome and crazy to see your own DNA being analyzed.

Foundations are a possible answer. In the last year we've seen foundations give grants to a number of tech groups and/or platforms. iPython via Sloan and Code for America via Knight for example. There are many areas where venture capital ha

Really recommend watching The Last Train Home. It's a documentary about a family that works in Guangzhou in order to pay for their children's education in their rural village. Deals with many of these same issues. And is a haunting and fant

Agree strongly with this. Because pure information lacks a clear limiting factor (space in your apartment) I find it to be even harder to handle. It builds up fast, and if I don't clean it out every few months the noisiness of it makes it a

Having used both arduinos and mindstorms the learning curve is significantly higher with arduinos. You can basically directly build robots with mindstorms with no knowledge of programming. With an arduino it would take significantly longer

Completely agree, and great book. Though I believe Buffet's strategies no longer follow Graham's as closely as they use to.

This may be completely wrong. But is mbostock's http://bl.ocks.org/ an example of this? Makes sense, since he's one of the creators of the nytimes graphics as well.

If I'm reading the study correctly the impact seems to be: 1) There is a correlation between female execs and success, so companies that tend to do better are also companies that tend to have female executives. 2) We can't make any statemen

Why should the LP's have a say in whether to sell or not? If they'd prefer to hold public Facebook stock, they could take their cut of the return and put it back in fb stock.

I agree largely with this--especially about removing DRM. What complicates it for me is that it's very hard for me to have any sympathy for the publishers as they brought this upon themselves. They can't play victim as long as they keep DRM
