Hotspot introduced the JVM Compiler Interface (JVMCI) a while back, so you could drop in any JIT replacement, including Graal. https://openjdk.org/jeps/243 This is different than using GraalVM, which has all the polygl

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that. I wonder if that's okay though — if you're that familiar with someone and their work I'd expect your bias towards that specific person overrides any broad gender bias.

Hey, sorry if it came across as condescending, I really didn't mean it to be. All I wanted to say was I don't think the choice is obvious and leave a few googleable buzzwords for anyone interested to go read up more on it. I don&#

I've always referenced this as one of the subtle points of genius for how Java did lambdas: by requiring captured variables to be final it removes a lot of ambiguity around what a variable name refers to. I like that local variables ca

I don't want to rehash this here, but this is actually a less obvious choice than it can seem like at first blush! Erasure and primitive specialization have a very deep set of considerations and tradeoffs that touch a ton of language f

I disagree. In general once you have a primitive specialized library kicking around in your path, you can pretty much just always use it for anything with primitive keys no questions asked. You don't have to over-optimize by deciding w

These enhancement proposals are often OpenJDK/hotspot specific. I do believe this left to vendors.

Ah, I should have been more careful then. I was under the impression that Boise was dealing with an overwhelming transplant issue and was resistant the way Austin and Portland have been.

Are you reading it top to bottom somehow that you're even coming into contact with slang you haven't heard used? In my experience it's always filled me in on the precise meaning I've needed.

I hate how much this whole thread is just everyone dripping with sarcasm. The same reason we elect mayors but not every single single person who works in city call. Or cabinet members under an elected president. Effective governance and pub

Hmm. I find the post a little shallow here. Half these things are somewhat debatable and matters of taste. I think a lot of experience without a nuanced view of how universal best practices are (or aren't) is wasted experience. Or mayb

Not trying to be defensive or anything: do you have any examples? I'd love to take a peek at what patterns and designs Java's lambdas don't work well for.
