So... I tend to think that social media deserves to be ranted about and that teh corporations are, in fact, Actually Bad, so I'm pretty forgiving of those parts. (And, in fact, I like that it gets duplicated in people's own litt

My charitable read of the comment here might be: the only culturally acknowledged web presence today is that of the Platform -- and when the platforms are so monopoly-adjacent, the skills necessary to build a planet scale platform really ar

"high value" in this case isn't about the numeric value, but has to do with how often the number comes up on a pair of dice. Particularly, 6 and 8 are the most prized.

You mean how much better would I perform for an extra million dollars? How much better could I perform with a team of assistants each making six figures? Why on earth should one accept a percent-based framing of these ludicrous numbers?

I mean, that kind of is what we're talking about here -- at any time you can switch between saving your stuff locally vs. self hosting with the Node server vs. a hosted option like this.

You can also host a Tiddlywiki on Glitch and I think it's the smoothest way to let someone try it, bar none. I put together a project there with some scripts to automatically load in a theme, plugins, etc.: https://glitch.co

Thanks for sharing this: I'd never even heard of riving knives. Wild to think of how many technological improvements like that have made the world safer/better without schmucks like me having any idea.

I've only heard the, you know, missing-finger classic table saw horror stories very indirectly, honestly. My parents both spoke of OSHA rules like they were the gospel of the earth below, and the union had the power to ruin the company

My parents met when they were both working construction. My mom was a surveyor and a laborer at various times; she helped get my dad into the union (Philly) and he was a carpenter. My mom stopped it to raise me and my sibling; my dad did it
