Have Doughnut and Have Drill were the govt programs (which have been declassified) where we used acquired MiGs to learn their weaknesses. There are some great videos on YouTube and books from people who were directly involved in the Red Eag

Highly recommend folks who are into aircraft warfare pick up a book about how the AIM-9 Sidewinder was developed as a side project at China Lake by the Navy that had to be done under the radar due to politics. It's a great story about

IRR contains data - question is can you trust it? RIPE has cleaned up their stuff, sure, but the rest of the IRRs out there haven't. Next question is which IRR once you get past the RIRs? AltDB? There's a few out there. Lots of cr

The challenge is with scale. If I'm a network who has many networks downstream of me I might have 50 to 100 prefix changes in a month. None of my upstream providers are going to like manually vetting all of those - and none of my custo

A portion of the IPs hijacked had ROAs. The real question is how many networks doing RPKI Origin Validation (OV) weren't accepting the ARIN TAL (ignoring ROAs from ARIN) due to their license to provide them indemnity. Remember that RPK

Cogent and Level3 weren't filtering their own customer. This is what happens when large companies say prefix list updates / validation is too much of a burden and allow customers to run bareback BGP. That said, Cogent is going to

The NANOG community is much better to operate in. You are dealing with your peers (ha) and what you say generally resonates with the audience better. At IETF, you have people who collect paychecks from companies who technically run networks

We can't even get IPv6 everywhere after several decades. We'll be dead before this is a thing (and it won't be).

The IETF is a pita when it comes to the routing area. Operators aren't well represented there and it's vendors running the show (this is why Randy Bush calls it the IVTF, and he's right). I am happy to see folks like Job make

Problem is you'll eventually reach a point where the problem is deep and requires them to escalate, and if you aren't checking the box of tested customer cpe they'll stop. Example of this is when I found a Comcast backbone li

+1 to init7. They've gone above and beyond when I needed them to change their routing policies to improve end to end latency to a specific destination. Good luck getting that from a major us carrier. And I wasn't even a customer.

Yes I'm well aware of routers policing TTL=1 packets, but if you see consistent loss all the way down it's usually a sign. This compared to seeing individual spikes on intermediate routers which are usually control plane policing.
