It's interesting how differently the experience has turned out for different crowds. I've seen numerous anecdotes from more technically-inclined types saying that their Mastodon posts not only get greater engagement than their Twi

If it meets the poster’s needs, what’s the problem? Better that old electronics continue to get used than for them to be junked. Though my primary monitors are newer, I have monitors that are coming up on a decade old that get used as secon

Heavily dependent on the circles one’s part of in my experience. Everybody I followed when I moved to mastodon several months ago (mostly devs, apple users, and a few designers) are still there, actively post, and have no plans to return.

Discord is convenient and polished, plus there’s only one Discord and many already have an account there. I don’t agree that it’s a good alternative to Reddit but I can see why people might find it more appealing than something like a Lemmy

For TVs I would agree, but there’s a visible difference between 4K and 5K at 27”. Don’t seem any point going past 5k for 27” monitors though, that truly is overkill.

Not entirely sure but I think OLED pixels modulate brightness with PWM, which causes high frequency (though invisible) flickering.

Makes sense, but I hope that there’s meaningful progress on microLEDs soon. While OLED burn-in has improved a lot, it’s still a concern for the lengths of time that people keep screens for… my 5 year old VA panel TV still looks identical to

I've not seen updated stats in a long time but saw blog posts from game devs several years ago showing that on Android, there's quite a bit of piracy going on for many one-time-purchase apps, especially games. While these devs are

The choice of font itself is fine I think, but the way KDE uses font sizes, weights, colors, and padding/margins could use work. Other OSes/DEs better use all four cues to denote information hierarchy and importance which reduces

To me Cinnamon and some configurations of XFCE feel closer to a traditional Windows-style desktop than KDE does, but very few distros ship either as their flagship DE.

"I already have an account there," is a much more powerful force than some realize. Signup fatigue is real, and a lot of people will just hit the back button if it turns out they need to register a new account to participate.

KDE has felt a bit odd to me ever since I think v5 or whenever it was that there was a big shift in its UI design. Some people really love it and that's great but I think many of its quirks/unique bits will be lost on general audi

My opinion of this way of handling HDR is kinda mixed when it comes to phones, but on computers and tablets I prefer it to the way that e.g. Windows handles HDR, where non-HDR parts of the screen look weirdly dim, which makes you want to on

There’s a ton of little power user affordances sprinkled through macOS that aren’t present in GNOME, and some not in any other desktop environment. Here’s just a few shortcomings compared to macOS pulled from memory and from playing with my

Going login-only would be suicidal. A large chunk of Reddit’s traffic and probably the majority of new users come from search engines, which login walls lock out. It’s not like Twitter where most growth comes from existing users linking twe

That’s not going to be much of a roadblock for LLM trainers… they crawl the web just as well as they consume API output. I don’t think this will accomplish anything but anger legitimate users.

It’s been several months so I forget the exact issue, but at that point whatever the C# runtime was didn’t install cleanly without manually building a specific branch or somesuch, with no official package being available for FreeBSD.

It really is frustrating when companies decide to do anything except focus on and improve their proven core product, chasing dreams of wholly unrealistic valuations.

It's not just on BSDs that these breakages occur. The forums are full of reports, many of which occur on Linux. And yes, I've actually considered starting a project of my own. The main thing that gives me pause is not writing the

I use Infuse with Plex because the official Plex Apple TV app has a really annoying bug where a lot of videos have slightly desynced audio, and Plex refuses to fix it. Infuse does not have these issues and plays everything flawlessly.
