I don't want to critique personal taste, because it's ultimately preference and who am I to judge yours? On the other hand, one of O'Brian's strengths is his wonderful characters along with his beautiful prose. Even to t

Despite being on shaky ground due to local minima, barren plateaus, classical simulability, and more, variational quantum computing is definitely a real field. ChatGPT can't even hallucinate properly.

If you're going to try and get an aircraft to cruising altitude without using its own energy, surely the easiest concept is with a tug aircraft towing to altitude. Hell, there's even fairly speculative concepts like Magpie envisag

Pretty much yes. Trim to your desired speed in level flight and you can go hands free. Large fins mean strong yaw stability, long wings mean strong roll damping, dihedral on those long wings is relatively large as well so you're stable

Getting overloaded is common in stressful situations in aviation where it's often called getting behind the airplane. It's the reason we're taught to aviate, then navigate, and then communicate. It's a graceful degradati

I think we're talking past each other a bit. In this moment I'm not trying to persuade you of anything about glyphosate though I obviously disagree with you, just saying that there are plenty of us out here who do argue in good fa

If you think that people saying that glyphosate is safe are arguing in bad faith I can see why you'd think there's a lot of disingenuousness around here. I can't speak for other people but I've defended glyphosate in ple

The same can happen in a live game. Apparently LAN games don't check for consistency in game state so you can just diverge over time. One of the observers in ASL desynced in the RO8 just the other day so it travelled over into remaster

I don't have any strong opinion either way but here is, to me, the best form of the argument. I think the clear analogy is copyright in photographs. There is no a priori reason to believe that copyright should apply to either photograp

If we're going to stay away from motor paragliders and other ultralights then you've still got the flight sustainer single seat gliders such as the Diana 2 which take off with an engine with peak 35hp power.

I understand your frustration but complaining about paywalls is not only off-topic and repetitive it's also explicitly called out as something we should try and avoid when commenting on HN - https://news.ycombinator.com/

I've got mixed feelings about the news media bargaining code but I don't think the lack of designations is one of its problems. Only stepping in once negotiations fail seems to be how the law is intended to operate. 52E(3) of the

All of those statements were Maudlin's opinions. I personally don't see why it's objectionable for two branches of the wavefunction to exist simultaneously past entanglement with an outside system, but most of all I just don&

Funnily enough, the first half of that interview was successful in killing my last bit of curiosity about arguing over interpretations of QM. He talked about young physics students eager to learn about the fundamental nature of the universe

I was living in Alice during the pandemic and loved seeing all those planes whenever I was at the airport. It seemed so surreal to have A380s at this small town. It was a great place to be during covid; no lockdowns and less traffic in tour

You seem very confident that a human can't catch a dog on a hot day. I hate to be that person, but do you have a source for that? I've gone running with plenty of different dogs in temperatures of above 30 degrees over the years.

A very good question for which I haven't been able to find any official answers. Here are some thoughts: - Wear of the cable at the shore ends. Just as abseiling reduces wear on rope compared to lowering, ferry mounted drive means limi

A bit niche, but I'd add in Condor and its excellent thermal, ridge, wave, general weather simulations which make virtual soaring satisfying. It's good enough to have races in and you can even connect your normal XCSoar device.

For the longer careers I think you have to look into BW players. Off the top of my head Bisu might be the standout, starting in 2005 and still competing at a decently high level in ASL aged 32. Flash's career is slightly shorter, start
