The official client has a limit of 3 machines for free users. I would have probably converted to paid, or another service, if not for unofficial clients (on mobile where smart sync is irrelevant) allowing me to stay under the limit

It’s gzip that caused your issue, not tar. The lack of index in tar is actually a strength for surviving corruption, as there are no critical areas, ie you can lose any parts of a tar archive and recover useful data from the rest Tar.gz and

The degraded mounting is a valid concern. Rebooting while in a degraded state is problematic (from a ‘might lose ssh access’ standpoint, not data loss) The other concern seems to be the auto mounting of stale disks, which is by design and w

If you want full skin customisation (including menus/layouts) via GUI, Amber is a good choice. It is the most customisable skin, and one of about 2-3 skins that seems like a UI designer has had a hand in it

This is one area that really grinds my gears: the trend in UI design to reduce contrast because full black on full white text is too contrasty. Whatever minor improvement in readability on their quality 3000:1 contrast ratio monitor pales i

Pulseaudio is opinionated in favour of quality. For example if attaching an input to an output in pulseaudio it will resample by a minuscule amount to sync the clocks (eg 47999hz to 48000hz). This sort of thing does not come for free, and a

OTOH it is the reason I moved to iOS. Privacy is important, but so is having full access to your own data. You don’t get that on Android these days without rooting - adb backup barely works and more than half of apps opt out

I’ve always been confused by the popular choice of compression on tar archives. If a small portion of a gz, xz, zst, etc archive is corrupted you lose everything after it, defeating the purpose of using a stream format like Tar. The algorit
