I look at this differently. On-prem proponents always fail to account for hard problems they absolutely have to solve, like tamper protected access logs, centralized server access controls, replacing failed hardware, backups, secure network

>Backups are not hard either. I guess you never setup one, because I’ve see numerous attempts at this and none took less than a month to do.

Setting up a db with backups, PITR, periodic backup tests in 30 minutes? You made my day :) Also how about controlling who has access to servers, tamper protected activity logs? It is just scratching the surface.

AWS IO is very good considering EVS is a networked drive. NVME is available if you need it too.

My comment mostly relates to this > Also with lambdalith you probably end up needing an application framework as opposed to just using mostly vanilla features of your language of choice. The point I make is even with lambda per endpoint

I disagree, it is much much more likely that a former dev would leak a SSH key than someone would care to find an SQL injection.

Your devs would need one such VM each for testing. It at least you’ll need 2 VMs - staging and production.

Just thinking about bitcoin utility. Could it be wise for a country to hold it reserves in Bitcoin. Just in case other country tries to freeze its holding.

I think you oversimplify a lot and miss many real world things that a Google sized org has to deal with. Machine maintenance - someone has to coordinate updates across multiple data centers run by different organizations. Imagine you want t

I don't see how I can use a local machine to demo a feature to my PM.

SSH keys, security updates, monitoring, access controls just to name a few. How do you stop a former employee from running a bitcoin miner in your servers? How do you detect that hacker has got access to your server?

I don’t buy this. From the top of my head I can think of many things not handled by the Lambda runtime: session cookies, routes with ids in them like /author/15/posts, having to specify Content-Type for responses, generating

Scales to zero means you can span as many environments as you want and don’t bother. Every dev can have multiple environments to demo features and do experiments.

This is not correct. If I send money to a random dev in Russia I don’t break any law. But I simply cannot do this because it is technically impossible. Crypto is tech that makes it possible.

I’m not expert in Svelte or React and have been following your conversation. You stress the point that two-way data binding creates mess. I tend to agree since I did my share of desktop programming long time ago. However, I don’t see how Re

Most of production EBS volumes will be with deletion protection on. Also AWS asks you to explicitly type “delete” when you delete things. I’d blame cloud provider for making it too easy to destroy data and not having built-in backups. But t
