Freenet[1] does actually have a decentralized social network plugin, sone[2]. It's not exactly user friendly, but at least it seems to prove that if people care about these things enough, they will use a solution even if it is difficul

What makes you think these hypothetical terrorists are after Americans, not Chinese? And why is religion the only reason they could be doing this?

What makes you think that? If their computer came with an OS preinstalled, with Mongolian, for example, as the language, they would not have to ever see any English anywhere. A flag might be more universally recognized way of selecting the

I think the question was, why does changing "girl" to "woman" make it sexist by definition?

It's not like you would just automatically get more money because you speak another language; you have to go work somewhere where they need you to do so.

Not really. They're not creating a new standard, but forcing everyone to use the same one; whether it's the best one or not.

It does if the player can only play as one of the factions. Especially if the factions are really called "Germans" and "Russians". The war was fought between the Axis and the Soviet Union, which included plenty of nation

It seems like in the USA, gifts to a spouse are exempted from the gift tax[1]. I don't know about USA, but here (Finland) any unusually large gifts given just prior to death are considered a part of inheritance. [1] http://en

Maybe it's precicely because of the abstract nature of music that people need to judge it based on something more concrete.

The question is "which country is the richest and most powerful". If we use the per capita statistics, Luxembourg is. That doesn't sound quite right, does it? If we look at the totals instead, the top ranks are USA, China, Ja

We're talking about nations, not people, so I don't think "GDP per capita" is relevant. USA has by far the highest total GDP. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nomin...

US military budget is, what, ~$700 billion? I don't think a $100 million is going to improve anyones odds of survival if spent on equipment/research/something else, but it can have a big effect on morale if the soldiers know

I would actually welcome a unifed interface across all devices I use. I'm not sure if Windows is the one I would use, but the idea itself sounds pretty good to me. I haven't used anything from Microsoft since Vista was released.

I guess I was lucky in that respect. My university taught cs in two different cities (out of the three where they had a campus), and many advanced/optional classes only had a teacher in one of the cities (with an assistant in the other

The point is that games require you to spend 100 hours for "ridiculous grind" for no other reason than to motivate you to pay to not grind. If paying was not an option, the game would be designed to not require any non-enjoyable g

I doubt there would be games like that (same as now, but where spending time is the only option). The whole mechanic of spending a long time waiting is there to encourage paying to not wait. But yes, it would not be abusive if there is no w

Didn't hurt? Perhaps, but it didn't do much good to them either. Just look at Nokia who had a touch only phone in 2004 (7710) and a tablet in 2005 (770). Those techs only succeeded years later with iPhone (2007) and iPad (2010).
