If the app is only half as good as the Primephonic service that Apple acquired and shuttered and on which it is probably based, it will already be an asset for classical music lovers worldwide. Apps like Spotify are hugely inadequate for br

I once took a cab in the middle of the night. The cabby was a elderly gentleman who did not seem to know his way around very well. It was a long ride so we got talking. Turned out he was the new boss of the company (a fairly big company, lo

This is a very personal take, but one of the things I have always attributed to the Baumol effect is the following. My partner works in the (semi) healthcare. She loves it but her main stress factor (nemesis even) has been lousy management.

This! On my Xubuntu installation(s) the rendering has become so slow to almost be unusable. There were some helpful tips floating around to remedy this situation (turning off webrender seemed to help) but these have stopped working as well.

Certain types of inference (mathematical, genealogical) seem to be difficult for it, but other kinds work remarkably well. I have been playing with narrative inferences to interesting effect. Ask it to tell e.g. Cinderella from the perspect

For me the golden nugget in this piece is the Morris principle: "Code tends to be extended to its level of incomprehensibility."

I am a notoriously difficult person for gifts. Now that I have everything I need even more difficult than before. I think the best gift I ever got was a proper dutch oven, around my 20th birthday. It became my go-to pan. I still use it on a

I understand the attraction of slow cooking. It ties neatly into our desire for authenticity and even mindfulness. However, the last piece of kitchen machinery that changed my life is the opposite: the pressure cooker. It allows you to go f

Thanks for clarifying that. I just read your blog about your 25+ years of PKM (go c64!) and noticed your older blogs that are mainly about software engineering, so I seem to have jumped to conclusions. Apologies. My misgivings about grand P

Articles like this are like catnip to me. If they are part of a cluster, I will easily click away a whole morning. However, they usually leave me feeling a bit bloated and unsatisfied. The PKM gurus I come across seem to use their system ma

I have been writing fiction for as long as I could hold a pen and always wanted to be a writer. But then computers happened and getting an interesting job was as easy for me as snapping my fingers. In my early thirties I realized that unles

Over 25 years ago I was researching algorithms for a search engine I had been commissioned to write, and for its disk allocation strategy I had settled on a "buddy algorithm" from The Art of Computer Programming Vol 1. It had nice
