Generally, the good reasons you'll see for using C are lack of C++ compiler availability and embedded programming. The bad reasons tend to be variations of developer inertia and the inability to decide which features of C++ ought to be used

> This, to me, is mathematics. Playing, confirming, questioning — even in my real life. It gave me a much sadder answer for people when they ask me “when am I ever going to use this”. This isn't exclusive to mathematics. I'm sure there

I have a bit of an addictive personality and the easiest way of preventing myself from wasting time is just by getting rid of the thing. Your response is the generic moderation response; some people just don't understand that it would be fa

What do you assert I'm doing right now, then? I think you turned the point on its head -- I don't care about the operating system as much as I care about the tools.

I picked Python because I like Python the language. I put up with the standard library, I'm not thrilled about there being so few decent cross-platform IDE's supporting Python, and module hell can drive me nuts, especially considering the f

50 pages into a rather short novel may be substantial enough; 50 pages of War and Peace only scratch the surface. I wasn't hooked in the first 50 pages of W&P, but I came to enjoy the book immensely in a few hundred. I'm already saving

Uh, what? If you want to learn Java, learn Java. If you want to learn CS, learn CS. An algorithm, for instance, isn't dependent on any particular language -- it's up to the programmer to incorporate it into whichever language he/she wants.

I imagine quitting would just be a minor annoyance until they find someone who does exactly what you used to do. Not many are in the position where they would actually be considered valuable and perhaps beginning to approach irreplaceable.

Given another reply that you posted, I'm not sure 6+ hours would be reasonable using Ubuntu without a massive battery slab. Even with a bunch of tweaking, battery life tends to be lower than what one would get with Windows. I would suggest

Could you give some examples? I have 2 HN, 3 YouTube, 1 Google Search, 1 python.org, 2 eBay, and 1 Gmail tabs open and memory usage is 300,000 kb. No one (who is reasonable) would have 30 tabs open on a netbook, so I'm not even considering

Until something can match FF with ABP and NoScript, I don't think I'll be switching. It was mentioned somewhere that Chrome, at least for now, cannot allow the exact functionality that FF + ABP allows. ABP for Chrome != ABP for FF.

I, too, recognize this as a weakness in myself. Project Euler can easily make me feel like a loser, and the crowd that chants, "If you can't do pointer arithmetic, kill yourself," doesn't help, either.
