When you can do the proof, you actually do understand; you just may not understand your understanding (viz. the SMBC comic on Polish Hand Math; I think this is it: http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=1917 )

The assertion that people in privileged positions can never see their own privilege is refutation-proof; but when you start creating negative categories like "not-abused" to privilege, it's hard to claim with a straight face that anybody ex

On 14, the failure mode is called "not carving reality at the joints." Because .00001% of men wield large amounts of political power, whereas even fewer women (at least, visibly) do so, political power is a male privilege. There are certain

That's interesting; because I think I recall something in the language of the safe harbor law where if a content hoster starts actively policing their own content, they can be held liable for anything that slips through their net.

By "Discordian," I'm thinking you mean the TAZ-theory and other stuff from RAW's other work, not so much the carefree pranksterism of the Principia Discordia, right? Either way, it's a model for which I hold such a low prior probability th

It would appear the market knows which continents to build high-speed rail on, and where to build them, which--I would guess--is the point you wanted to make in the first place.

dantheman's criticism is more on-target. There are certainly places in the US with highly-concentrated populations, a significant percentage of which would like to travel to nearby population clusters. But as a Tampa resident, I feel confi

I read him as saying it's no more complicated to build; not that it's no more complicated to operate. This interpretation makes sense in view of his point that safety concerns (pre-takeoff checks) are what prevent widespread personal flight

I do like Camdhu and Tamdhu; I'll have to give Glenrothes a try. I highly recommend Port Ellen 30; it's the only "ghost whisky" I've tried, but it certainly invoked a feeling of saudade that such a rich taste will be lost to history. I'd p

Is that a counterfactual counterpoint? Given the complexity of business success and failure, it's probably best to pick examples which don't rely on facts demonstrably not based in reality.

Testimony from the victim is considered evidence in most court systems. I wouldn't expect a jury of average people, especially back then, to be aware of the cognitive biases that made the testimony so unreliable.

The point he was supporting was "no matter how rich you are, there's only so much time you can get by trading money for it," in which context $500k/year isn't out of place--especially, as you noticed, with Warren Buffett as the example.
