150,000 accounts out of SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY FUCKING MILLION had trouble accessing email for LESS THAN A SINGLE DAY on A WEEKEND. No accounts or emails were deleted. I'd argue that is an insignificant number.

I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that the original vouch from the donor didn't factor into the 2011 invite, and that he was accepted solely on his own merits. Most likely, having attended a previous TED conf bumps you up on the invite

Heck, I've used rcs in the past five years because the server didn't even have cvs installed. It's not exactly like you need advanced branching/merging, atomic commits, and a distributed system for a one line change to /etc/hosts.

I think this is another misunderstanding because I worded that question so poorly. Apologies. Yes splitting your data into a training set and a test set is a really good idea for problems like these. But I'd still argue it's near impossibl

But I imagine those are more like regression tests, right? Not write the test first BDD/TDD-style, then implement the whole search engine around it, tests. That was the implied context of that statement.

Yeah, I've also seen O'Reilly books where they did allow people to distribute the "official" typeset pdf: http://caml.inria.fr/pub/docs/oreilly-book/ But I think at worst, this link would be gray-market rather than black market. Of cours

Automated test suites don't automatically imply TDD. Many people use automated test suites and CI without TDD.

I always say, somewhat some tongue-in-cheek, and somewhat intentionally provocatively, that if you can use stuff like TDD and pair programming, then you're probably working on a boring problem. And I think there's some truth to that. On a

Well I guess some people dvr everything, but I don't think this is a spoiler any more than ESPN's website the day after the superbowl, or a newspaper headline reading OBAMA WINS. Maybe if it had been posted at 7pm EDT yesterday.

Technically your keys are only used in the handshake. After that you'll get the same strength encryption regardless of the algo used for the original handshake. So using DSA doesn't mean that your connections are now unencrypted. The prob

There is a howto on the gnupg site, but frankly it's a little out of date. It focuses enough on hardware to scare people away, but these days most readers are libccid compatible, so it's a non issue. Setup is actually pretty simple. Basic

But to me that's like saying no study has proven global warming is real. Because study X only measured ice cores in Antarctica. And study Y only measured tree rings in the amazon. A far better refutation would be be: Well I ran study Z, a

Article talks a lot about science, and then provides no actual studies that refute the original claim. That's not how science works. Devise a hypothesis. Develop a test to confirm or deny. Run test. And then he tears apart the study wit
