There is a small benefit as some videos have "enhanced 1080” but no higher resolutions.

I would say that ~/Documents is pretty good here. The only trouble I have had is it being the default save location of some apps. But I haven't had something yet write there without any explicit action.

The problem with your brain and your eyes are that they aren't available after the user picks their preferred font or for user-generated content or probably not after the text had been translated.

Off the top if my head I can think of two reasons. 1. Doing stemming is hard with substring search. 2. Substring search is more expensive. (Bigger indexed and more joins/merges)

I don't think Google uses this in a major way. It also probably isn't the best fit for this use case. 1. You can really only subscribe to particular URLs. So this would require millions of subscriptions. It would only make sense i

It depends how it is implemented. After extracting the ID and looking up the post you can then check that the "slug" matches. Return a 404 if it doesn't. This may add a bit of complexity (if the slug data is mutable you need

I don't think it is. If this was the main goal they would have just done nothing. Instead they rolled out a design which sucks for both desktop as well as maintaining shittiness on mobile..

To be fair Reddit needs a redesign. The existing UI is pretty good on desktop but sucks with smaller displays. Of course their last redesign was so bad that they are already working on a new one: https://sh.reddit.com/ . It

There are actually some good reasons. The default paste action will just paste text or HTML. However most OS clipboards have the ability to paste various types of content. If the clipboard contains a "better" media type it makes s

The worst part about this is that it requires knowing the font. I generally like to let users use their preferred don't so I don't change the default. So I have no hope.

Yeah, this is a bug in their quick example code. Basically think that you simply give each thread a start and stop offset with simple byte division. Then each thread handles the first line that starts after the start offset up to but exclud

I run into this dilemma a lot, not even for profitability. I would happily test my software on macOS and Safari, but I'm not paying for that privilege. So a lot of my stuff just doesn't work. But Windows, Edge (and previously IE)

LOL "Yes we love the ads" said no user ever. If they had any intention of listening to user feedback they never would have started this project because the feedback is obviously going to be negative. At the very "best" t

I mean it isn't a coincidence. But this framing is pretty negative. These apps broke and started crashing because they were updating the start menu. Probably related to the addition of ads. Then they blocked these versions because they

If they don't think that Google is giving them a good deal they can simply opt-out of the index. But they don't want to do that, because Google is giving them value. This is their method of side-channeling an "unfair" de

You can do that I suppose. But I have found that in most cases I have a unique index on the ID anyways, as they are often table primary keys. So really I just have to ensure that it is either an INSERT or an UPDATE to a record that is owned

It can be very useful for offline work and latency hiding. For example the client can generate data structures with the final IDs then sync them to the server. This can also be useful for implementing idempotent updates. The alternative of

It isn't two APIs, but there is effectively some batching. The main thing to focus on is triggering layouts. Basically you want to do all of your reads together then all of your writes. For example imagine we are trying to move one ele

Even if you can't use it constantly having a high top speed is useful. Most people aren't downloading large files most of the time. But it is very useful to be able to have those bits fly when do you do want to transfer something.

That isn't the problem. It is completely possible to process untrusted data in a batch script. (Even if it likely isn't the best tool for the job) the problem is that the method of getting that untrusted data to a batch script is

I see that a lot of the blogs have feeds but aren't tagged as such on the site. For example the first item I saw was https://foudil.fr/blog/ which has auto-discovery metadata pointing to https://foudil.
