This is partially true but for many things the price is different. In the US drugs are priced assuming that there are some number of rich people who can afford them. This often results in higher margin pricing which is more profitable even

My too. I tried opening a feature request on the Wayland tracker but it got closed as not wanted. I can think of various use cases such as screen-sharing a window and its audio together or remote access to a single window + audio.

Even if LLM-style token prediction is not going to lead to AGI (as it very likely won't) it is still important to work on safety. If we wait until we are at the technology that will for sure lead to AGI then it is very likely that we w

It is technically possible but the IPC will destroy you. You would need to transfer inputs and outputs as well as have JS shims to call it. Most of the code will be doing tons of memory accesses which will need to be transferred back and fo

YouTube has two things that I think make it hard to unseat: 1. It is very popular, people publishing there can pick up views for basically free. People go there to find videos. There are lots of eyeballs that you can pick up just by showing

Maybe they will have to work on the App Store to make it competitive, rather than just being a monopoly. It already has a very privileged position being installed by default and highly integrated. They should be able to keep it the most pop

I would love to see Nintendo throwing a fit if they had to allow homebrew to run on their consoles. And I think it would be good! Why don't they get a cut of every game sale and get to block other companies for producing software for t

Yup. I would highly recommend a helpful 404 page rather than "silently" redirecting the user to a different page that they didn't type. Just put a search box, a link to the homepage and "Did you mean these similar pages:

One major benefit of IPFS is that people seeding individual works and people seeding the large archive groups can share data. It seems that these torrents are blocks of data that aren't of direct use. That being said while the IPFS pro

They've had a few good messaging apps that were then left to rot and slowly break before being killed. GTalk was pretty solid and Hangouts was amazing at launch. But they all got worse over time instead of better.

At some point they removed the future answer list. Now it just sends it from the server (depending on your time zone you may get "tomorrow's" word, but you no longer get a years long list).

Hard work and reverse engineering I would guess. The also make it sound like they also patch some non-windows software. I'm curious what the quality of these are. It seems fairly easy (if expensive) to binary patch most code most of th

At a very abstract level there isn't much difference between dropping a disk cache and writing anonymous memory to swap. Obviously the actual step of writing to swap is more expensive but once the data is out of memory they will both r

It's "mostly static". I just tell my CDN to cache HTML for 10min. This makes the origin server load trivial but still makes updates go live fairly quickly.

I checked what my feed reader does. It seems that it typically gets 304s (I send both If-None-Match and If-Modified-Since) but still about half of the requests get 429s. So the request pattern basically looks like: 1. Get 304. 2. Wait 5min.

Due to connection setup roundtrips, TCP slow start mechanics and quality of network connections it is usually better to terminate the client's TCP connection close to them. But I agree that moving the frontend rendering near the client
