Also odd that, if you read until the end, the author professes to have not actually tried using ECS yet. It's a good collection of the author's impressions of what ECS looks to be from the documentation, but it's a little out

But this is EBS + redundant NFS-mountable server, which is at least worth 2 EC2 instances as well as 2 x the EBS cost, which makes the equivalent ~$100 per month (m3.mediums) plus $0.20/GB/month for SSDs.

Presumably all of the spam copies are actually harming your rankings as well, as Google will see those as duplicate content. (Note that I'm guessing here, I have no particular authority in the area)

It's possible that the device will transcribe and record the text of everything, and then only send it upstream in batches along with the consumer-useful chatter. Over a TLS link, that would look quite innocuous.

Ah yes, that's possible; I'm not sure why I leapt to that conclusion. In that case, an app which uses this library and is only published on the Amazon Android App Store would not be tracked I guess. I actually find it kind of int

Wow: "For applications on Google Play that integrate this tool, usage is tracked" without even an option to disable that. Sure, it's open source so can be changed by editing the source code, but does anyone else find that ki

To protect against these kinds of attacks (and DNS rebinding attacks), most (?) modern browsers won't allow a webpage to make requests to non-routable IP addresses unless the page itself came from a non-routable IP address. Not that t

I've got a mains-attached one (ie not solely battery powered), and the button is "hush" which silences it for 5 mins (although it chirps once per minute to remind you that it's hushed). If you hold the button whilst it&

Also interesting is that the Guardian article is by the same person (George Monbiot) as the OP video. Not saying that's good or bad, just worth noting.

Oops; I typed in "patio11" and then after a reasonable delay got "502 Bad Gateway: Registered endpoint failed to handle the request.". It came up with mine quite quickly, so guess it spends some time ingesting the data?

Money laundering potential is a particular problem for bookmakers, that's true. The big name ones really don't want bad press, though, which I imagine is where most of the social responsibility stuff comes in (as well as trying t

It's pretty heavily regulated (you won't really see any evidence of black-market bookmakers in the UK although presumably they do exist), and most bookmakers are pretty keen on "social responsibility". At least for the

I have the pleasure of having been involved with one of the first network protocol reverse-engineers of the LIFX [0], and off the back of that hacked together a NodeJS library and a Wireshark dissector. I've updated the NodeJS lib to

Isn't it a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy? As in, Amazon make a loose prediction about what you'll want to buy, but the hook of having that one available within 1 hour biases you to be more likely to buy that item. Then Amazon
