I'm not sure Stallman needs "standing up for." The Kottke post from Winer had a quote from Stallman's rider, and that's about it. http://kottke.org/11/10/richard-stallmans-rider . Some people think Stallman's weird, but I'm certain he's d

I would rather have a system where karma has some sort of multiplier for their submissions or comments, i.e. voting for a comment or submission from someone with high karma counts as f(karma) times as many votes. This preserves the "legacy"

It's more about generating publicity for DARPA than an actual solution. Just look at the website design and the language. I mean seriously, a forum? Most public DARPA projects are awarded via grant application from serious labs, and the fun

DARPA has a ton of research done by foreign nationals. (I have worked in labs which have foreign nationals who get paid to write code for DARPA projects).

Even if you develop a tolerance, it might be the case that the regular news doesn't seem as interesting or enticing anymore. While other news sources might actually summarize in a headline, and so deprive you of that need-satisfaction dopam

I like both. I think yours conveys a sense that computing is not driven by the particular application of computers. The quotation I provided conveys instead the idea that computing is not only about a particular tool of computers.

The About page reminds me of a Dijkstra quotation: "Computing is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes."

Maybe the rule is "don't be embarrassed about asking questions when your business/reputation is on the line." Kind of easy to get starstruck, I guess.

Also, you probably want designing teams smaller, because it's easier to parcel out and subdivide engineering problems than design problems: I feel like it's easier to maintain consistency across code than across various elements of user exp

Agreed. In this sense I'm worried that google will lean more toward "Internet For Dummies"(e.g. losing the + feature in favor of double quotes to make way for G+), attempting to coral my internet use into certain patters the same way Apple

My biggest problem with patent-overload isn't Apple v. Google v. Amazon, and lost innovation, it's Big Company v. Samll Company (particularly the physical engineering kind), with large legal departments versus smaller ones. E.g. "please top

This misses the point that the land still costs about the same it's just that the cost is swallowed by the government, not the factory-owner. That is, the government assumes the opportunity cost of not selling to some other individual. It

"Whatever Google is planning cannot be [just not kicking off pseudonyms], because they think it will take them months to implement." That's relevant speculation, regardless of whether he's right.

I think it's still a reasonable "BS" call. If you support pseudonyms, you stop kicking them off. That doesn't take first-hand knowledge to notice.

What concessions (if any) did Apple make, especially with respect to cloud-based services?

Music syncing, etc. was what I was referring to. I don't think they'll flame out right away, but in 5 years, what will they have that doesn't ship with your OS?

Dropbox executed well. But where can Dropbox expand to? Unless dropbox can get better and better, eventually the competition will catch up. Better device and product integration? That will require more and more cooperation from Windows, App

The biggest problem I have is that Apple and Jobs have become synonymous, but who designed the iPod, iPhone, iPad, iMac, Powerbook, G4? Oh yeah, Jonathan Ive. Damn.
