Common marketing wisdom is that you need to focus on "solutions" -- what problems does your product solve? As an engineer, though, this isn't what I want to know. I want to know what your product does , and then I will dec

This makes me so sad. The old Chromecast experience -- choose media on phone, play on TV -- is all I ever wanted. I hate using a remote to browse -- my phone is much better. I hate having my TV logged into an account -- my family, kids, gue

I always preferred Q/E to strafe, A/D to turn. But these days, almost no games actually let you bind keys to turn anymore. This makes me sad. Of course I use the mouse for precision turning and aiming. But if I'm just navigat

So many products make email verification optional in order to improve their funnel. But it's a huge security risk, because it leads to bugs like this. Very few engineers and PMs will actually stop to think: "Wait, what if the user

> Google claims gRPC with protobuf yields a 10-11x performance improvement over HTTP. That... doesn't make any sense, since gRPC is layered on top of HTTP. There must be missing context here.

Thanks, I was wondering about this. The house pictured obviously isn't a $5M house, and obviously isn't the house you'd build on a $5M property either. Moreover, looking at the area on Zillow, everything is in the 6-digit ran

Those counts have always been wildly inaccurate, to the point that engineers on the team were embarrassed to be displaying them, but product people felt it was important to the user experience anyway so kept it. Nice to see the engineers fi

Isn't this exactly how Doom worked, long before Serious Sam? But Quake went a different direction, sending the client updates about every entity they could see. Which had some benefits (players don't have to be perfectly synchroni

People are exaggerating a bit here. Texas ran out of power in 2021, and before that in 2011. These were totally unacceptable events to be sure, but I'm not sure once every 10 years qualifies as "common". People might be confu

The lines are admittedly fuzzy, but I'd say Cap'n Proto still mostly belongs to me, not Cloudflare. But contributing to someone else's codebase is tricky. A lot of times, it'll take the owner more time to review your con

High density is awesome right up until you have kids and then it's awful. I think a lot of young people who don't have kids have trouble understanding this. If I had no kids I'd love to live in a downtown high rise apartment.

You're saying that highway construction encourages building of new housing, enough to use up all the new highway capacity, but that this doesn't bring down housing costs. This is quite an extraordinary claim that goes against basi

How about you ask people: Would you vote for bonds for a highway expansion that will not really make your commute better but will provide more accessible housing, bringing down housing prices, and thus allow you to have a bigger, nicer home

This is quoted a lot but misunderstood. The conclusion people seem to draw from this is that widening the highway didn't help. This is wrong. 4 lanes of bad traffic travelling at 30mph is still creating twice the value of 2 lanes of ba

This didn't sound right to me so I did some investigation and I think I found a bug. Keep in mind that Cloudflare is a complex stack of proxies. When a worker performs a fetch(), that request has to pass through a few machines on Cloud
