Yeah but I didn't quite get if his application servers were on EC2 or not. The usual comparison is Nginx+EC2 vs. S3 vs. CloudFront. (Now the page is down so I can't check again..)

I wonder if the author was trying to compare S3 costs to running your own Nginx on EC2 (which involves other cost than just bandwidth), or to some private datacenter? (Meaning his reference to "taking a huge load off their application serve

I hate web articles that don't have a publish date. This one would seem like a year and a half old.

I just want to note that if you use friendly timestamps ("posted 3 hours ago"), you take a big responsibility of having them _always_ be correct in any situation and automatically update without reloading the page, etc. They also need to in

My couple of years as a Spotify subscriber have radically changed my music listening habits. I used to buy records and listen to them over and over again. Now it's more about constantly discovering new music (eg. via Facebook links) and hav

Bad excuse. Sure you can _warn_ the user, but completely forbidding using secure passwords is out of the question.

Doesn't inertial scrolling refer to the scrollable area keeping on scrolling when you drag a bit and let go? And accelerating if you drag it "more"? (Like iOS table views do.)

I agree. Anybody interested in Redis should get to know its hash tables, lists, sets, sorted sets, etc. It's sometimes amazing how many problems Redis can solve out-of-the-box, just because it provides these common data structures as a pers

The uncoolness in most hacks like this is they can accidentally create a single point of catastrophic failure. If your cron job fails to run for a while, your entire website will go down.

There's something fishy about an emacs article that doesn't mention vim at all.

You should use the right tool for the job. Sphinx is a very functional search product, is available as a Ubuntu package and is easy to integrate to e.g. Django data models. (The article links to some weird page in http://www.sphinxsearch.o

I wonder what the purpose of the linux firewalls is if there are already AWS security groups in place? Seems like a lot of extra complexity to track the IPs of every EC2 instance whenever they launch/start.

Frameworks like Django and Ruby on Rails 3 do a good job of HTML-escaping everything that goes out. It's better to escape _everything_ by default and let the programmer explicitly say if something should not be escaped. I guess GitHub is us

Me too. The main value of the trackpad is "inertial scrolling" - you can scroll through a web page with a very small finger swipe, and then stop the scrolling where you want with another tap. Much more effective than a mouse wheel.

I agree, I think your development process on EC2 needs a strategy on how to regularly build new AMI images. Probably a mix of updating some things in-place while running, and sometimes creating a new baseline AMI image of your whole OS and
