More to the point, those grand houses (not to mention, all manor of nice public works like subways in NYC) were built on the cheap labor of people who couldn't dream of owning their own home. The reason that kind of architecture became sca

At least several, maybe all, of those were directly inspired by rails migrations. Whether something automatic, but imperfect (renames, anyone?) is actually better than something explicit but easy enough seems a matter of taste.

They don't collide because the file names include more than just the number. And yes, manually renumbering is exactly what you'd have to do. Timestamps obviate that. Theoretically, you can still have collisions (two migrations alter the sam

Two developers pull code with migration version 4. Each writes a new feature involving a migration. Both get the number 5, which then collides when they both check in. But it doesn't collide at the source level, so you only find out when th

I can see a case for using it as the mute switch. I can't see a case for changing the behavior and not providing any way at all to get the old behavior back.

Sure, that's why they chose it. ;) And rightly so, since they came up with a good idea. But California came up with the iP(ad|od|hone) so it gets to set timing for that.

This parenthetical caught my eye: "(It is also worth noting that of the 100 Americans named by Forbes, Jobs is one of only seven who made their fortunes on their own.) " My, how things have changed.

No, but it was arguably price-performance leader, which the Mac, in raw terms, decidedly was not. I guess the other piece at the beginning was the IBM brand, but that wasn't enough to make it take off like a rocket.

Another factor here is that mobile devices are all a tier or two down from personal computers in terms of the raw number of dollars. Seems like a 15% premium is something people will consider paying if it only amounts to $30, but might not

It's certainly true, in most cases, that noodling around on your own is no substitute for professional experience. But where are the entry-level Haskell jobs that would get someone that experience? Only route in is academia?

Anytime a bunch of people who sit on the same side of the table, economically speaking, get together, even socially, it's some flavor of collusion. Just forming social ties with people you should be in competition with is a little suspect.

I think the beef some of us have with Google is that they seem to have left their balls at the door. However much Google is or isn't living up to "don't be evil" these days, I suspect most of us can agree that we'd rather have their rules

I'm not arguing that copyright infringement is right any more than I'm arguing trespassing or operating a sewage treatment plant in a residential neighborhood are right, only that they're not automatically "theft" just because they're bad.

Stealing an idea is metaphorical. And generally speaking, I'd say it refers to taking credit for the idea, not simply taking it and understanding it for yourself. Credit as originator is scarce. Instantiations are not.
