I once had a major tech company tell me during negotiations that "you can't really put a price on free meals", which I thought was a truly absurd thing to say.

Motives aren't really relevant here. Reciprocation or replication by others does happen, regardless of motive, so caring for family and friends (or strangers for that matter) is very much in one's self interest. I took issue only

Agreed. Would you want to see that your doctor's written stuff like that in your chart (e.g., "Patient's got some really fucking bad gout!")? No? Then maybe it's unprofessional.

The state literally prints currency to facilitate commerce, so it is beyond unjust to then seize it from people who use it to conduct commerce regardless of whether there exist other means of doing so. I sold a car to someone on craigslist

The Dell XPS 15 [1] weighs around 4.5 pounds, has a higher-resolution display than a Retina MacBook Pro, a comparable i7 quad-core, 16 gb ram, etc. It also has excellent Linux support (source: I have one that I installed Fedora 20 on and ev

Have you been able to successfully use the proprietary NVIDIA drivers? That's the only thing I've had any trouble with at all (on the XPS 15). Otherwise, it's a really great machine.

There's no official Linux version of the larger Dell XPS 15, but it's also a great choice if you need a little more power: quad-core i7, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd. I recently installed Fedora 20 on it with no problems. I except Ubuntu 1

It's still just too much boilerplate to define and use immutable types. Named parameters would help a lot. Something like Scala's case classes would help even more, and along with them, some kind of pattern matching.

Indeed. The $7500 federal + $5000 state tax credits combined with being able to drive solo in the HOV lane make it a pretty good buy (or lease).
