I was just about to post a comment with : "Me: But there are other forms of concurrency. Processes that communicate using files, pipes, sockets, or even shared memory." You are spot on with the problem itself being hard. As I understand it

It turns out this is a really hard problem. If you haven't seen it already check out http://www.netflixprize.com/ to set your expectations appropriately.

Took me a 2nd read to get the daemons joke... Very well put, I get the same impression about decomposition. The bottom line is each CPU core can execute some sequence of instructions. If there's more than one core, there can be more than on

IMHO, this guy is 6 different kinds of crazy. Parallelism is of course more efficient. Parallel algorithms are about determining which steps in an algorithm can be executed independently of one another to take full advantage of multiple CPU

I left the PhD program after finishing my MSc and passing my qualification exam without trying my candidacy exam due to financial pressures. I could have easily scraped together enough with part-time jobs to solve the immediate pressing pro

Time is the limiting factor as I am building my application and working full time. Every morning, I run 1 mile and do 25 pushups. Starting next week I'll repeat that in the evening. I make sure to stretch and do some of the katas I can stil

You have already got money and your goal to feel like you achieved something is to make more money? I think money is just a means to an end. Think about your day to day life. Get up, eat, work, drink, be merry. As long as you have enough mo

Imho, there is an important technical side to this discussion. How scalable is your application? A bunch of friends scalable is a far cry from TechCrunch scalable. Are you confident that if you break on TechCrunch, your app won't fail? Ther

I went to a borderline elite school, Notre Dame. Many of the students had this sort of an elitist attitude. However, I noticed that those students who aspired to true greatness - who saw Einstein, Newton etc. as setting the bar - often had

I think that it comes down to the same reason Civ was such a popular franchise. Whenever you finish one thing, there's another thing to do. Oh, just a few more points until I level... oh, I can finish this dungeon and get a new sword. There

For one thing, don't be too quick to underestimate the value of socialization. You don't have to be a vapid partier just looking to hook up, but making social mistakes is much less costly in college than it is in the business world. Find so
