This is exactly the way I feel. The best way I heard this described just today was by Anthony Fantano on his Twitch stream, where he said that a music streaming service just shouldn’t be in the news this much. That is spot on in my opinion

Why is it unethical? Again, the alternative here is that both Young and Mitchell are forced to maintain an association with Spotify against their will, or change their opinion on Rogan (an opinion which many people share and hold to be corr

Who is censoring anyone? Both Neil Young and Joni Mitchell are exercising their freedom to associate with who they like, and expressing the terms by which they will associate with businesses like Spotify. I have always found it very telling

By ‘steal a session’ I mean be currently logged into my computer, either with the desktop locked or unlocked, and to jump onto another computer and log into the same session - so I get all my open programs, windows, etc. if that makes sense

I transitioned to Linux at work after Windows+WSL2 for a number of years. I went with Fedora - most of my work is with RHEL-compatible servers, so I’m somewhat familiar with the package manager. I generally develop in Emacs as it integrate

I finally transitioned to Linux on my work desktop at the end of last year, after using WSL for a number of years and Linux on my home desktops for ages. I found that managing a Windows 10 VM in virt-manager for all the Windows-specific stu

Are there any OEM laptops with RYF certification? The only ones I can see on ryf.fsf.org are 10 year old refurbished and re-branded (and very expensive) Thinkpads.

Patrick has already done this for us :-) The standard practice for Slackware is to install the entire distribution - roughly 12GB. If you don’t do this then your mileage may vary, and you may find yourself wasting time doing your own depend

Leaving aside the fact that binary blobs already existing in x86 processors doesn’t mean much for users because they can’t help that - I mean, GNU existed before Linux, and only became a completely free operating system when Linux was relea

This is completely obtuse. Why isn’t your anger at the Guix or Linux-libre maintainers’ supposed withholding of information (‘censorship’) directed instead at publishers of closed-source, unauditable binary blobs, which constitute a fundame

For my part, I think Guix has a much nicer CLI experience, and I find the documentation easier to comprehend. I also prefer the Guix DSL in Scheme to the Nix expression language. I haven’t used NixOS though, which could make things a bit di

This is an enormous thread now - in case it hasn’t already been mentioned, Guix neither helps nor hinders users from using any kernel they like. There is a repository called nonguix, made available by community members, which includes the u

Absolutely. git at the command line works fine but I have always found it very dense, and prefer to use it only for very basic or very specific tasks. Magit makes all the usual things I do with git so easy. I have been using Emacs on Window

Strongly disagree. The experience of Linux on desktop computers has never been better, and has been steadily improving for years. ‘Year of the Linux Desktop’ is of course a meme so it doesn’t really matter how long it has been current year,
