Yeah, I think my initial comment missed that part of the equation. It isn't straight racism that's driving the differential response as it is indirect racism by way of inequality. The net effect ends up amounting to the same thing

Now that the opioid crisis is a problem for white people, science makes an appearance in the policy discussion. Contrast to the crack epidemic in the 80s: fuck'em, throw them all in prison. Edit to add: I wish the best of luck to those

Remember kids: the administration doesn't care if you blow your brains out -- they just care that you don't do it on campus. There's a reason I always told people to seek help off campus.

Americans tend to look down on anyone who has a doctorate from anywhere in Europe that isn't Oxford or Cambridge. I'm not sure it's justified, but there you go.

This is generally why I think it's a good idea for undergraduates to get a couple of years of work experience in before returning for their PhDs: the experience of grinding out work that you really don't want to be doing is saluta

You're sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the busiest shipping channels in the world. There isn't a shooting war underway, but you are within range of Iranian cruise missiles and naval craft. It's not exactly war, b

Learned this the hard way when we moved abroad for a few months and wanted to get our American Netflix on. No biggie, now we VPN into my home and use that connection to check out US Netflix: their blocking is entirely IP-based.
