Has anyone spent significant time in both? How many milli-emacs of functionality does Sublime have? Emacs is over 35 years old (starting from the ITS version), so it's due to be replaced. But it's also really really entrenched.

Suppose FizzBuzz were a perfect proxy for programming ability. Some programmers are FizzBuzz-capable, and the rest are FizzBuzz-failures. Members of both groups interview for jobs. A FB-capable programmer goes on three interviews, gets a

Retiring at 35 is an unrealistic goal unless you either inherited a bank or want to live under a bridge. Since you have one income and two kids, saving 3-5% is pretty good. The easiest way to save money is to have it deducted from your pay

I'd like to see the average salaries of the people providing this work. I expect most of them are in the range of $40-80 per hour (annualized), or about 20% of the total. If that number is right, the customer is paying 25% for the work, 25

You have successfully argued that the data is too valuable to purge. You haven't argued that it's not worth backing up. In this case, it sounds like it should be stored in Documents and backed up. (Are you the original article's author?

As a user, I can't imagine a class of data that is so important it should never be reclaimed to save space, and is so worthless it should not be backed up. The important use case is what should happen when you lose your phone/tablet and buy

It's a little bit alarming that Sauce Labs even considered any strategy other than pristine VMs for everyone. The dangers outlined in their article should be immediately obvious to everyone. Maybe it was immediately obvious to Sauce, but t

The next hacker currency should keep Bitcoin's strengths, i.e., decentralization and anonymity, and lose its weakness, the fixed supply. Is anyone working (in public) on the problem of designing a currency that adjusts its supply algorithmi

Do these countries recognize and count their lesbians? Is it socially acceptable for lesbians to live together? If not, that would go a long way to account for this growth in single women. 20 seconds of Googling convinced me there's no co

The advantage of a second box is that you can use the main and test machines side by side. if you switch drives, you're cut off from your main development environment while you're using the other system. There are disadvantages too, of cou

Those specs are generous compared to the hardware on/for which 2BSD was developed. I have used Mini Unix on a PDP-11/45 with 32 Kbytes (16 Kwords) of core memory and dual 2.4 Mbyte hard drives. I once took a class, 6.031 at MIT, where we di

Most people who've chosen either career retire without falling into paranoia. As for others demanding continued output, I'm not seeing that at all. For example, my employer is offering people over 50 early retirement incentives.

In the subject line, "praise" is misspelled as "blame". The approximation that 2^10 == 10^3 is incredibly useful in many contexts. The "kilo" prefix just makes it clearer and easier to remember.

Like K&R, the official docs were written by the language designers/implementors. I think that's important: it eliminates a level of misunderstanding (between the designers and the writers).

Pointing a new English writer at Wallace is like pointing a Lisp newbie at the SBCL compiler for a code sample. I love his writing, but it is dense and hard to comprehend. It is not, IMHO, a good example for a beginning writer.
