Without knowing anything about the scope of the idea it's hard to conjecture whether it's worth pursuing on his own time. However, the potential competition is probably a good thing.

So essentially, the members of the dev team will be competing against their old colleagues if they are searching for a new job at MS. Now that isn't a nice way to go.
