I have the Samsung Windows 8 Developer Preview tablet they handed out at BUILD 2011, and I can confirm that it's going to be very tricky indeed to hit buttons on the desktop. The Samsung tablet has a screen that's either the same size or sl

I get Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 confused all the time (I'm not being sarcastic here, even though it might sound it - I genuinely do! The names are too similar). As a developer, it also doesn't help that Microsoft made a lot of noise abo

Major props for the reading material at the end. That's one of the best books on programming ever written, imo.

Ah, gotcha - I misunderstood what you meant there. I've seen the current state of the SDK and API, and while I understand porting to a new kernel was probably a lot of work for them, it makes even less sense considering that most of the Win

Actually, there has not really been a huge shift in the API or the dev tools. Yes, there is a new native layer called "Windows Phone Runtime", which is a partial, semi-overlapping subset of the Windows Runtime found in Windows 8. However,

Jeff Bezos stated this explicitly during the presentation - Amazon wants to make money when you use the device, not when you buy it. So they sell the Kindles at a very aggressive price in order to get you into the Amazon ecosystem. If y

I'm having some serious cognitive dissonance over your comment. You're saying that if apple does not change the form factor of the best selling phone on the planet, sales will "drop off a cliff"? Solely on the basis of your personal scree

That is correct - all 4s devices have both CDMA and GSM support; the difference between the AT&T and Verizon "versions" is just one of activation, basically.

I, for one, wear suits simply because I enjoy them. I like how they look. More and more, as I get older, oddly. In my 20s you would have had to force me into one. It's definitely true that there is status signaling involved, whether it's co

You're forgetting to figure in withholding, self-employment tax, etc... that $24K/year increase would be to his gross income, not his take-home income. The article said he averages 2 suits a month, or $8K in gross revenue, so that extra $1K

I've seen this pattern a lot, particularly in websites for picking reservation dates (airlines, vacation homes, cars, etc...). It's very useful in that case, and I find that it's much easier for me to keep track of what I've entered that wa

Features are one thing - yes, nearly all IDEs have lots of the same features. But that looks like they copied XCode 4's appearance directly. It's a pity the screenshots are so low resolution - hopefully some higher resolution shots of the S

I was able to get in running against an existing statsd installation trivially, and explore it to my heart's content on my existing metrics. And I can look at the source - what more do you want? That was the easiest 3rd-party dashboard setu

Nope, you're not missing anything. row-fluid resets the grid, allowing you to pretty much arbitrarily dice up your columns however you want.

I might have used protovis for my first iteration, if not for the fact that I discovered it just as d3 was introduced :) I'm normally a server guy, but needed a good dashboard for our OpenTSDB metrics project, so I started diving into clien

Core APIs and languages do not expand at an "unfathomable rate". How long as the Berkeley sockets API been with us? TCP/IP? Twos-complement arithmetic? Do you honestly think that those are going to go away for the sake of some vaguely hand-

I don't really see this being comparable to a moped. A moped is like a teeny tiny motorcycle - it's an exposed 1 or (at best) two seater with barely any cargo capacity, no protection from the elements, and no crash protection. This should a

Really? iOS has very effectively abstracted away the filesystem at a consumer level. I don't see it as much of a jump to see that occurring at the programming level, at least for application-level coding. Obviously, there will always be a n

It's the screen. My main motivation for upgrading to from the iPhone 3GS to the 4 was the Retina display, and it was important to me because I do a ton of reading on my phone. Much of it in Instapaper, actually.
