that's not really how it will work. If to generate $1500 per year each person needs to invest $150,000, then it ain't gonna happen.

I have used plenty of japanese cars and japanese electronics to know that the japanese are NOT perfectionists in general. Fastidious workers yes, but that don't make perfection.

there needs to be a user owned group that funds these critical projects in a transparent and effective way. I would sign up in a heartbeat.

how often is the last mile maintained? Once established there's usually not much need fro maintenance until it is replaced. Coax cables and fibers have little use for maintenance. Homeowners can comply with the FCC just as easily as t

it's also pointless to wipe out polio if the asteroid is going to stomp us the next day.

you don't need billions to eradicate polio. How much money has Bill Gates actually spent on polio? There are at most a few thousand workers in Pakistan, india and nigeria going around with polio vaccine oral drops that cost cents per d

it's the usual thing. we all want to be zuck. we don't want to cramp the lifestyle of zucks by unionizing in case it hurts us when we become one. Like lottery ticket buyers oblivious to the fact that buying a ticket is an expected

if you took a year to brush up on your algorithm books, and learned all the in-vogue developer buzzwords, couldn't you get some remote work? On the internet no one knows your age.

if the government isn't stepping up to help old developers, shouldn't there be a developers' union to take care of them? Old age and ill health can happen to anyone. Even crack developers.

The intent of startups in the Hacker News context is not mere profitability. I can start selling fruit from a bike part time on the side and make a profit but I don't think many here will count that as a startup. The intent of startup

If you do a startup while having a family, you are either desperate (can't get a decent job) or truly motivated by your idea (in the way true believers are and don't get a job by choice).

Why not let the market decide? why not just charge $10k or 10% additional tax and just let all the people that want to work come in. Then when the startup fails they can leave.

$21k works out to $10 per hour assuming the pilot works 2100 hours a year. Right now I am hiring commercial pilots at $25 per hour though not for 8 hours a day, like commuter pilots. An A380 burns 4000 gallons of jet fuel per hour which con

I was pointing out the difference between physical and legal restraints. Indentured servitude, while of the same color, is a much milder situation. The legal system of course returns an indentured person back, but an indentured servant stil

slavery is not only racial. The ottomans were more than happy to have white european slaves. An indentured servant is not physically restrained from moving away, while a slave typically is. SO the jails are closer to slavery than bonded lab

how often do great ideas succeed when done part time? Even if nine out of ten times you lose, total belief and commitment in your idea makes the difference between success and failure.

I didn't argue with the rest of his point. That he said that the thermostat changes the time the burner is on is not true. A thermostat is not a timer. Time on is not the controlled variable.

just like the steering wheel does not turn the car, and the rocket engine doesn't put the rocket into space. The controller controls the input. The state changes, because the control input is changed. The thermostat is not a timer.

There is no excuse to be dumber in action than the people/company/administration you oppose. Business is ritualized warfare. It's not about playing fair.
