The problem which I faced while trying to bootstrap a social product is that without some previous reputation/success, getting traction for your startup is very tough, and at times even demoralizing. It's better to focus on a single user pr

Thanks, 1 billion+ impressions are impressive. Would love to hear more about some of the technical challenges you face. Perhaps a blog post sometime on that? :)

This post reminds me of a post by Jacques Mattheij about an experiment he did by doubling the price of his app: http://jacquesmattheij.com/Double+your+price+(and+no,+Im+not... These two articles definitely make a case for experimenting wi

I had a similar reaction when I saw the mention of Ruby. I think it's a subconscious thing. It would help if you put this explanation up on the site in a prominent place as well.

Like others on the thread, I also initially did not "get" what your site was all about immediately. I suggest having that information above your sign up form - because I am not going to sign up for the service unless I know what it does.

Very well executed. My only question is whether you have any definite ideas for monetizing it, or just a project for learning and fun. Either way, awesome job.

Facebook groups seems to me like an after thought. On the other hand if Google builds something which has the privacy and groups built right into the core, it will make a different experience. Whatever it is, they certainly have the reach w

Never say never. Admittedly Google's recent track-record with seemingly social products like Buzz and Wave is not terrific, something tells me they would have learnt from them and would be looking to do things differently this time (if at a

Although my first instinctive reaction was negative, I really do hope Google gets this right. Frankly, a lot of people are pissed with FB's privacy issues, and if Google can take a new and refreshing approach to this (complicated) problem,

I worked on a fairly large GWT based project. Once your project crosses certain size, the entire compilation of Java to JS is royal pain and really affects your productivity.

The biggest advantage I see from my experience with node.js is that you can code in just one language from the client side to server side. Of course, server side JavaScript is _not_ exactly the same as in client side - but for most part, th

I wonder if they have some kind of automated test suite just to make sure everything works fine. Having worked on large codebases, it's almost impossible to make sure everything is still alright manually, after a new deploy.

Very interesting. At my work, we use Selenium for writing automated functional tests. I'm wondering how this will stack up against that... Is there a way to capture a screen shot when an assert fails? Often, that has been very useful in err
