Hey, OP here, thanks a lot for the input. I know that the company uses the same name for multiple stuff, but I also think that, from my very own experience, people associate the name "Docker" with containers in general, regardless

Hey, OP here, thanks a lot for the feedback. I understand some bits and pieces about how containers work internally on different platforms, I also have a draft article that goes into depth with these, but the goal of this specific article w

Thank you very much for your comment, it made my day. I have had a hard time getting started with these technologies, especially with everyone talking about these without explaining what they actually are in a basic state, that's why I

Agreed, I didn't mean to teach bad practices to anyone, I am just trying to put simplicity in front of efficiency so that people can grasp the technology better and benefit from that.

Hey there, OP here. Thanks a lot for the feedback. I believe simplicity at this phase of learning is much more valuable than efficiency, that's why I haven't tried to produce the most efficient images as examples. Since your sugge

The question was not specifically around Docker. What I wonder is, why wouldn't there be a seperate layer that abstracts away these platform differences, just like Docker did for operating systems?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this whole dev-prod hardware parity argument contradict with the rise of Docker? I don't know much about ARM or CPU architectures in general, but I have never heard companies testing their Docke

As a pretty basic user, it is mostly about adaptation costs regarding tooling, infra and code. My current stack mostly includes mysql as the default db, so my applications and tools also default to mysql and for now I don't see a huge

Probably yes, but that approach has its disadvantages as well. First, the biggest problem I see is the huge vendor lock-in you accept with the PaaS offerings such as AWS EBS or GCP App Engine. When you commit to one of these platforms, it i

Migrated my very small cluster from GKE to DigitalOcean's K8s a few weeks ago. I was using 3 nodes on GKE with 1 core & 3.75GB RAM per node, and the cost was around 100 $ per month including load balancer for the cheapest region, `

AFAIK, the whole idea behind the cloud-native approaches and tools in the ecosystem, such as Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, focus on reproducible builds that are platform-independent, at least that is my understanding of the ideal. I

Please forgive my ignorance: what do these terminal emulators do better than a basic terminal application, such as Terminal.app? My work with terminal is quite basic, I edit a few files, execute a few commands and sometimes cURL something.

I totally agree with this. I believe he needs to make a living out of the whole thing, but something that has a wide use-case like this should have been open-source, with some basic feature set at least.
