A couple more tips: Topical ideas are great. The judges can better identify with the problem that your hack solves, and it seems more relevant. Hardware hacks tend to steal the show, e.g. a touch-enabled chalkboard, hardware "facebook", or

Penn's second intro class is indeed in OCaml, mostly due to the effect it has of leveling the playing field. It really turned out quite well, and most of the students enjoy it.

My grandparents have been to Argentina a couple times in the last few years to get their dental work done. They have been extremely happy with the quality service as well as the pricing. Commercializing this is a great idea.

For anyone who is confused about the purpose of this site (in contrast to cstheory, for example), the distinction is that this is for non-research level computer science questions, whereas cstheory tends to frown on such questions.
