Completely agree. My writing and thought process has improved a ton since I've been blogging. Even better, you get a chance to interact with people and discuss a deep thought more than a twitter message.

Thanks -- really glad you're finding it useful. Yeah, don't mind the self references if there's meta discussions people want to have :)

Beats me -- isn't it a slow news week? :) I was really happy to see this at the top. I think it may be because we're both YC alum and some articles from betterexplained have been well received here in the past. But also, I hope, the need to

Hi Brett, thanks for posting and for setting up slinkset. I'm hoping to tap into some of the Hacker News wisdom in terms of sharing epiphanies :).

If you find your self with directories like "v1" "oldv1" "updateD!!!" you need version control :). Subversion has GUI clients integrated into file explorers so you don't even notice the overhead. I wrote more about it here, if you'd like co

Check out the work by Daniel Kahneman -- I believe he performed or referenced the study you mention. http://www.abc.net.au/rn/allinthemind/stories/2003/923773.ht...

Agreed. FFox is way too bloated, even with "8 gazillion tricks to speed up ffox!". The only must-have extensions are Firebug and Web Dev Toolbar, so I keep firefox around for debugging purposes. For everyday browsing it's chrome all the way

Agreed. Tip for experts exchange: just scroll to the very bottom of the page. The answers appear in plain text. (The hard way is to change your user-agent to a search crawler... they need to display the text to somebody ).

Thanks Daniel! Yeah, we've noticed many bloggers running contests via email/comments. Whenever one technology is shoehorned into another, there has to be a better way :).

Good question :). In Dec '07 we had some soul-searching and radically changed our idea from an API (selling tickets) to a self-contained blogging widget. We rebuilt the site and have been working with bloggers since the spring in an open be

I think you're overlooking the interest payments, which are gone forever as well. If you have a 300k mortgage at 6%, you are paying 18k year (1500 month) in interest alone. Yes, there are tax advantages but I think this is negated by proper

If it's useful, I wrote a guide to DVCS here: http://betterexplained.com/articles/intro-to-distributed-ver... Pros: Everyone has a local sandbox, works offline, fast, great change tracking, easy branches/merges, less software setup Cons:

I'm interested in online education too -- if interested, check out my blog at betterexplained.com. One problem I see with education in general is that there's plenty of content (like Wikipedia), but not enough focus on the delta that takes

I second that. It's really satisfying to take a crack at these. The forums are fun too, as there's usually several approaches to a given problem.

Great question, I'd like to know too. Sometimes I poke around popular open source projects, like the rails source. Here's how they implemented the syntatic sugar for things like "1.month.from_now": http://github.com/rails/rails/tree/master

Thanks :). I don't know what it is, but for a field concerned with abstraction people miss the forest for the trees. I try to catalog insights right as they happen, and try to capture the before-and-after: what, exactly, was the turning poi

I was definitely enjoyed that essay and want to spread its message; it's why I linked to it and quoted from it :). However, I've been writing about these concepts in this way since 2001, way before I ever heard of the essay (here's my earli

Good point -- C was designed to interface with hardware ("high level assembly") whereas javascript was designed to interface with web pages & browsers. Either way, the history helps understand the design decisions.

That's exactly it. We show math as this complete and perfect system, whereas it was discovered, often times, through trial-and-error. Retracing the steps can help show why certain decisions were made. For example, why does C have a separate

Yeah, that's a good point. I definitely believe in having rigor when needed. Concepts like calculus, unfortunately, wait until high school or college, so it's being thrown in the river without ever having swum. Sure, some people survive, bu

I hear you -- bookmarklets just aren't that well advertised, even though they can be pretty powerful. I use delicious, google translate, instacalc (I'm biased for that one :) ), and post-to-tumblr occasionally.
