Totally agree. When first learning git, I got comfortable with git stash: work work, bug comes along, git stash, apply bug to master, git stash apply to get back to my state, work work. Then I started getting comfortable with branches. Git

In the basic use case (changes into a central repo), git and svn look similar. Git's power is revealed when you realize how it tracks changes individually -- it's super easy to branch and move changes around. The decentralization isn't just

Some off the cuff feedback: I wouldn't spend time on features, spend it on cleaning up the design. * Use twitter bootstrap or some other framework to make the site look more professional. * Why are the prices in weird denominations? $1.60 p

I agree. I'm blogging now (side project, about ~1k/month via an ebook) and Antonio's book would have saved me a lot of time. I'm planning on using it to boost up that number :).

In programming terms:it's the difference between copy-pasting some code vs. extracting the core design pattern and using that. An important part of a design is the tradeoffs/decisions that went into it, and how it adapts in the face of new

Awesome example about the derivative! I think the best part of geometric thinking is running ideas on your "native hardware". Our brains are massively parallel, visual-processing monsters... and we try to think about ideas linearly, like we

Apple is known for making 10 prototypes of an idea then culling it to 3, then 1. Microsoft & others tend to start with one version and constantly evolve that. The difference is you can get stuck at local maxima / evolutionary dead ends.

Interesting philosophical questions :). I think the goodness of the act is determined (partly? mostly?) by the intent at the time of its inception. In poker, you don't judge a decision as good or bad based on if you eventually win the hand.

I should have clarified -- it's not that a loading message is unnecessary, it's how it was implemented. The fact that a giant overlay modal appears on every page in their public docs calls into question other UI decisions. This isn't the pa

The loading modal was a huge turnoff. Why would you ever show that to a user? After clicking a link, when is your browser not loading the next page? I see that modal when browsing the docs ( http://jquerymobile.com/demos/1.0/ ) in Chrome

You know, I realize a lot of life falls into the "shopping cart" effect. If there's 5 lines at the grocery store, there's an 80% chance you'll see another line moving faster than yours (there's only a 20% chance you picked the fastest line)

That book is a reminder of a time when Wrox & friends weren't trying to crank out 5 lb tomes on .NET SOAP Interoperability. So many modern books read like a student trying to pad out a page count for a professor.

Yep, it's definitely a steep jump from 20GB shared to dedicated. At that point it might be better to move onto your own hardware (if I fill up 20GB database then I'm doing something right).

Yeah, I don't consider Heroku or the platform-as-a-service providers good for hobby projects, esp. something like a forum or blog where you can just get a cheap VPS somewhere. The sweet spot is having very reasonable billing like $15/month

Think Google App Engine with more languages, with real database access (bring your own db if you want, or they can host it), dozens of add-ins, and a sane pricing model.

Very well put. Jumping into a finance/consulting job for the money and living out your life is the career equivalent of cranking out jingos for commercials or kitsch art reproductions. We're human beings, we're meant to follow our passions.

My feelings on this are hard to put into words -- Zynga is the equivalent of churning out crappy romance novels, soulless pop music, kitsch art, or even junk food (made to be addictive, incidentally "nutritious"). "Art" is undefinable, but

I agree -- I hate these "negative" lists because there's an infinite number of ways to screw something up. Enumerating them isn't helpful.

In the USA, poverty leads to obesity. In India, poverty leads to starvation. There's a huge difference when a government's concern for the poor is getting them to eat "healthier". Have you ever seen a desperately thin homeless person in the
